SOPER REACHES MILESTONE IN DELVAL LOSS AT MANHATTANVILLE

PURCHASE (NY) – Delaware Valley College junior forward/center Emily Soper hit the 1,000-point plateau for her career, but the Aggies dropped a 74-69 decision to Freedom Conference foe Manhattanville College in their final road game of the season.

Manhattanville improved to 8-15 overall and 3-10 in conference play while Delaware Valley fell to 12-12 and 3-10. The Aggies will wrap up the 2011-12 season on Saturday, February 18 (1:00 p.m.) when they host FDU-Florham for Senior Day (four seniors to be honored before the contest).

Soper needed eight points on Tuesday evening to become the 13th player in program history to reach the coveted milestone. She found herself in foul trouble once again and played just seven minutes in the opening half, scoring six points as Delaware Valley trailed by just two, 29-27, at the break.

Soper picked up foul number three just 29 seconds into the second stanza, but remained in the game. Then with 15:58 remaining, she hit a layup off a feed from Sarah Delcasale for the milestone bucket. More importantly, it was the middle of a 6-0 run that gave the Delaware Valley a 39-36 lead.

Soper came out of the game after picking up her fourth foul with 13:24 on the clock and the Aggies clinging to a one point lead. Manhattanville scored three straight before Delaware Valley answered with 15 of the next 21 points, including a pair of treys by Brittany Battinieri, for a 58-51 advantage with 8:56 remaining.

The Valiants rallied and eventually tied the game at 64-64 on a Dominique Wilson layup with 4:21 to go. Freshmen Brenna Coll and Shannon Barlow followed with back-to-back baskets to put the Aggies back on top, but Manhattanville's Taylor Wilson hit a pair of 3-pointers to give the lead back to the Valiants at 70-68 with 1:21 left on the clock.

Both team missed opportunities before Soper was sent to the foul line with 28 seconds to go. She hit the first free throw, but missed the second. Taylor Wilson was fouled five ticks later and hit both attempts to put Manhattanville up three. Delaware Valley came down the court and Battinieri's game-tying, 3-point attempt with nine seconds to go was off the mark. The Valiants grabbed the rebounds and Taylor Wilson was fouled with two seconds to go and she hit both of free throws to seal the win.

Both teams shot just over 43 percent from the field and 41 percent from beyond the arc. The difference was the foul line as Manhattanville had 37 free throw attempts (made 19) compared to just 18 (made 10) by the Aggies.

Soper finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocks in just 20 minutes of action. Coll hit four treys and finished with team highs of 18 points and six assists before fouling out. Battinieri had 12 points, five assists and four steals while fellow senior Jackie Shunkwiler came off the bench to contribute 13 points and seven boards before she too fouled out of the contest.

Taylor Wilson was 7-for-8 from the foul line, including the four big makes in the final seconds, and finished with a game-high 23 points for Manhattanville. Kelli Hyjek had 14 points and nine rebounds while Alyson Caiazzo and Dominique Wilson netted 12 and 11 points respectively.
