PURCHASE (NY) –
Daulton Derr netted a career-high 29 points and Delaware Valley College hit its free throws down the stretch as the visiting Aggies pulled out a 66-62, Freedom Conference victory over Manhattanville College.
It was Delaware Valley's third win in its last four games as the Aggies improved to 7-17 overall and 4-9 in the Freedom. The Valiants saw their marks fall to 10-14 and 4-9.
It was the second straight road game that Derr posted a career high in points and the junior transfer notched 24 points in a win at King's College just six nights ago. He finished Tuesday evening 10-for-17 from the field (2-for-4 from 3-point land) and 7-for-10 from the foul line. Derr also added six rebounds in 32 minutes of action.
Derr scored 16 of his points in just 15 minutes of action in the first half as the team shot 55 percent from the field and took a 31-25 lead into the intermission. Manhattanville opened the second stanza with eight straight points and 13 of the first 17 for a three-point advantage.
Delaware Valley responded with a 7-0 run as
Nathan Bollinger hit for six points and Derr added a free throw for a 42-38 lead with 13:27 remaining. The two teams then went back and forth for the next eight minutes before four straight points by the Aggies gave the team a 55-51 lead with 4:01 on the clock.
A free throw and a layup by Colin Campbell with a Jack Bramswig layup in-between regained the advantage for Manhattanville. However, Derr responded with a jumper in the paint just 14 seconds after Campbell layup to put Delaware Valley back on top. A free throw by the Valiants' Amani Blackmon with 1:41 remaining tied the game once again.
Delaware Valley then took the lead for good as Bollinger went 1-for-2 from the foul line with 1:29 on the clock and, following a Manhattanville miss, Derr hit another “J” in the paint for a three-point game with 40 ticks remaining.
The Valiants would not go away as Bramswig came down and hit a jumper with 23 seconds to go. The Valiants fouled
Jay Donovan just three ticks later, but the freshman calmly hit two free throws for a 62-59 score. Manhattanville's Jeffrey Ventura missed a 3-point attempt and Bollinger was fouled with eight seconds on the clock. The sophomore hit both attempts for a two-possession game.
But it was not over yet as Trevoy Pointer drained a trey with six seconds remaining for a 64-62 ballgame. Bollinger was immediately fouled and he sank both free throws to seal the deal.
Bollinger played all 40 minutes for the Aggies and finished with 17 points.
Jonathan Jernigan added seven points while
Jeremy Beckett had four points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots.
Pointer was the lone Valiant to hit double digits in scoring as he finished with 27 points. Bramswig had eight points and six rebounds in the loss.
