WASHINGTON, D.C. – Delaware Valley College sophomore
Jay Donovan hit seven 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 28 points, but it wasn't enough as Husson University posted an 80-73 victory in the opening round of the 2012 Catholic University Holiday Inn-College Park Classic.
The loss dropped the Aggies, who were playing in their first game in exactly two weeks to 5-5 on the season. They will battle Denison University, which lost to the host Cardinals 77-35, in Sunday's consolation game.
Donovan connected on eight of 14 shots from the field, including a 7-for-9 effort from beyond the arc. He also hit five of six attempts from the free throw line. The 28 points topped his previous high of 20 at Swarthmore College earlier this month.
However, Delaware Valley could not overcome the performance of Husson's Marc Zaharchuk as he notched 24 points and 14 rebounds in just 20 minutes of action off the bench. He helped the Eagles (4-3) shoot 46.4 percent from the field in the second half as they outscored the Aggies by seven after being tied at the break.
Husson led for the final 13 minutes of the contest, but a late run brought Delaware Valley to within one, 70-69, with 2:23 remaining. Zaharchuk hit back-to-back buckets, but a
Daulton Derr jumper made it a one-possession game with 49 seconds left. The Eagles hit two free throws and they were answered by a
Jeremy Beckett layup with 19 ticks to go. However, Aaron Willis and Zaharchuk hit a pair of free throws apiece to seal the win for Husson.
Willis and Eric Modica had 10 points apiece for the Eagles. Beckett struggled by going 5-for-21 from the field, but the senior finished with 16 points and 17 rebounds for Delaware Valley. Derr and
Francis Arnold added 11 and 10 points respectively in the loss.
