DOYLESTOWN (PA) –
Brittany Battinieri celebrated Senior Night by becoming the 12th player in Delaware Valley College women's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point milestone, but Manhattanville College clinched a Freedom playoff berth and moved into a wild, four-way tie for first place with a 77-64 victory over the Aggies.
The Valiants improved their mark to 16-8 overall and 9-4 in the Freedom. They are now tied atop the standings with three-time defending champion DeSales University, King's College and Misericordia with just one regular-season game remaining. Misericordia was alone in first place until King's defeated them on Tuesday evening. Delaware Valley fell to 9-15 overall (3-10 Freedom) and will conclude its season at Eastern University on Saturday afternoon.
Battinieri was honored before the game along with fellow senior
Rochelle Teesdale. The two combined for 18 points in the opening stanza (12 for Teesdale, 6 for Battinieri), but the Aggies still trailed by nine, 42-33, at the break.
Manhattanville upped its lead to 17 eight minutes into the second half, before the Aggies went on an 8-1 run to trail 58-48 with 10:33 remaining. Battinieri capped that run with a jumper, leaving her just three points shy of the plateau.
The teams traded points on their next possessions and Manhattanville then followed with a turnover. Battinieri, who is Delaware Valley's all-time leader in 3-pointers, fittingly hoisted up another bomb and hit nothing but net her 194th career trey and points number 998, 999 and 1,000. The game was halted to celebrate the milestone and it also left the Aggies down just seven, 60-53, with 8:33 remaining.
Emily Soper made it a five-point game with a jumper one minute later, but it was as close as they would come as the Valiants went on a 7-1 run to put the lead back in double digits. They then cruised down the stretch to wrap up a postseason berth.
Battinieri finished with 12 points and seven assists. Teesdale had all 12 of her points in the opening half while Soper had 14 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocked shots.
Simona Gordon paced Manhatanville with 21 points while Carey Hickey and Kelli Hyjek added 17 points apiece. Hickey also dished out nine assists in the win.
