ASHTON (PA) – Neumann University opened the second half with an 8-0 run, en route to a 94-78 victory over visiting Delaware Valley College in the one-day Coaches vs Cancer Classic.
The loss dropped the Aggies to 1-3 on the season, the same exact spot they were at last year as they headed into Freedom Conference play. Delaware Valley eventually went on to win its first-ever conference championship and NCAA playoff berth. The Aggies open 2011-12 league action on Wednesday, November 30 when they host King's College.
Neumann (3-1) held a slim, 42-41 advantage at the break. The Knights jumped out quickly as Mike Walukiewicz hit a jumper and Mark Blount followed with a layup. Dom Gibson made a pair of free throws and Walukiewicz did the same to make it a 50-41 ballgame with 18:05 remaining.
Delaware Valley, which led by as many as seven in the first half, answered with six straight of its own, including four by
Nathan Bollinger, to trail by just three, 50-47. Neumann maintained the lead, although the Aggies got as close as two, 62-60, when
Daulton Derr hit one of two free throws near the midway point.
The Knights upped the lead to as many as 11 before Delaware Valley made one run last run and pulled to within seven, 82-75, after Bollinger hit a 3-pointer with 3:13 remaining. However, Neumann finished by scoring 12 of the game's final 15 points for the victory.
Patrick O'Connor led Neumann with 18 points while Walukiewicz and Gerald Bryant added 17 points apiece. Blount finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds in the win.
Bollinger scored a game-high 24 points and the sophomore also added five assists and four rebounds. Derr added 15 points and five boards. All-conference forward
Jeremy Beckett played just 10 minutes in the game and finished with two points and three rebounds.
