AGGIES CAPTURE GWYNEDD-MERCY TOURNAMENT CROWN WITH 66-62 VICTORY

GWYNEDD VALLEY (PA) –  Emily Soper scored 18 of her 28 points in the second half and was named the Most Valuable Player of the Gwynedd-Mercy College Tip-Off Tournament as Delaware Valley College posted a 66-62 triumph over the host Griffins in the title contest.

The Aggies, who started three freshmen, a junior and a senior in the game, improved to 3-0 on the season. Gwynedd-Mercy saw its mark fall to 1-2.

Soper, an all-Freedom Conference forward/center last year, connected on 10 of 15 shots from the field and was 8-for-13 from the found line in 31 minutes of action. She also added eight rebounds and did most of her damage in the second half as the Aggies rallied from a 36-30 halftime deficit.

Delaware Valley scored the first eight points of the second stanza as Soper hit a jumper and Brenna Coll and Brittany Battinieri connected on 3-pointers. Delaware Valley held the advantage for most of the half, but Gwynedd-Mercy rallied and took a 58-55 lead with 4:52 on the clock. Soper followed with a basket and a foul and converted the free throw to tie it up.

The game was still tied with 1:29 remaining when Sarah Delcasale hit a free throw to put the Aggies up. About a minute later, Soper hit two from the line. Nicole Dougherty sank a foul shot with 14 seconds left to make it a two-point game, but Battinieri sealed it up with two free throws with eight ticks remaining.

Soper was joined on the all-tournament by Brenna Coll. Coll, who scored 16 points in Friday night's win over The University of Scranton, added nine points and five boards in the title contest. Fellow rookie Kaylin Ryan came off the bench to sink four treys and finish with 16 points.

Jordan Dominic led Gwynedd-Mercy with 17 points. Taylour Alston and Brittany Neill added 11 points apiece.
