COLLEGEVILLE (PA) – Ursinus College led from start to finish as the Bears posted a 61-40, non-conference victory over visiting Delaware Valley College in the first game of 2011 for both teams.
Neither squad had hit the court for a game since mid-December (December 11 for Ursinus, December 20 for Delaware Valley) and the rust was evident. Both shot under 40 percent from the field, combined for just five 3-pointers in 34 attempts and also combined for 46 turnovers.
Ursinus (8-2) held an 18-6 lead nearly 14 minutes into the game and eventually went into the intermission with a 28-14 advantage as they held the Aggies to a 5-for-26 effort from the field (0-for-9 from 3-point land). However, the Bears were just 11-for-33 from the field and 4-for-9 from the foul line in the opening 20 minutes.
The Aggies (6-6) pulled to within 11 on three separate occasions early in the second half, but were never able to get their deficit to single digits and make a run at the Bears. They finished the game shooting 26.8 percent (15-for-56) from the field, including just 9.5 percent (2-for-21) from beyond the arc.
Dismond Lewis, Alex Shivers and Jen Sroba had 10 points apiece while Sarah Martin and Lindsay Treuber each grabbed 11 boards to pace Ursinus.
No Delaware Valley player reached double digits in scoring as
Emily Soper had a team-high eight points and also blocked four shots.
Jackie Shunkwiler notched six points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
