Jeremy Beckett scored 22 points while
James Jones netted 21 as Delaware Valley College advanced to the championship game of Lycoming College's Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament with a 73-59 victory over Worcester State College.
The Aggies (5-4) will take on the host Warriors in the title game at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Lycoming posted an 88-60 rout of Penn State DuBois in the first game of the tournament.
Beckett and Jones helped Delaware Valley show little rust from their 23-day break in-between games. Beckett, a sophomore center, shot 8-for-11 from the field and was also 6-for-8 from the foul line in just 26 minutes of action. Jones, a senior guards, was 9-for-16 from the field as the team finished just under the 50 percent mark (49.2%) with a 29-for-59 effort.
The Aggies were up five, 11-6, in the early going when they went on a 15-2 run – six by Jones – and never looked back. They led by as many as 24 in the opening stanza and eventually took a 38-23 advantage at the break. They built the lead back up to 24 in the second half before settling for the 14-point victory.
Nathan Bollinger also hit double figures for Delaware Valley as the freshman scored 12 points and also added six rebounds. Seniors
Chris Ellis and
Jason Goldheimer combined for 14 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in the win.
Worcester State (1-10) was paced by Dave Douillette's 22 points.
