PURCHASE (NY) – Manhattanville College used a 16-2 run early in the second half to pull away to a 71-49 victory over visiting Delaware Valley College in a Freedom Conference game.
The Aggies (7-10, 1-5 Freedom) opened the contest by missing their first 16 shots from the field and the drought finally ended when
Jackie Shunkwiler hit a jumper with 9:21 left in the first half. However, they were down by just seven, 13-6, as they were 4-for-4 from the foul line and the Valiants (10-6, 4-2) had hit just six of their first 20 attempts from the field.
An 8-0 Manhattanville run put the Valiants up 15, but Delaware Valley rallied with eight straight of its own. Manhattanville bumped its lead back up with seven of the next points, but
Brittany Battinieri hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute, including one with just three seconds to go, to pull the Aggies to within six, 28-22, at the break. Delaware Valley finished the half shooting just 24.2 percent (8-for-33) from the field (24.2%), but the Valiants were not much better at 31.3 percent (10-for-32).
Delaware Valley's leading scorer and rebounder,
Emily Soper, picked up her fourth personal foul just 70 seconds into the second half. The Aggies did get to within four, 33-29, as Battinieri hit a trey with 16:31 remaining. However, the Valiants scored 16 of the game's next 18 points as seven different players found the basket. That put Manhattanville up by 18 and the Aggies never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
Taylor Wilson paced the Valiants with 17 points while Janetta Arnold added 12. Beranda Felder just missed a double-double as she notched nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Shunkwiler matched her career high with 21 points and she also pulled down nine rebounds. Battinieri finished with nine points while
Sarah Delcasale had six points, eight assists, six steals and five rebounds. Soper played just 20 minutes because of the foul trouble and ended the evening with four points and seven boards.
