WILKES-BARRE (PA) – King's College opened the second half with a 21-9 run as the Monarchs erased a one-point halftime deficit and notched an 84-77 home victory over Delaware Valley College in a Freedom Conference contest.
The Aggies (11-11, 4-7 Freedom), behind 12 points by
James Jones and 10 from
Darryl White, took a 40-39 advantage into the intermission. However, the first seven minutes of the second stanza belonged to King's (11-11, 7-4), specifically Mike Wagner as he hit four treys and scored 14 of the team's 21 points in the big spurt that gave the Monarchs a 60-49 advantage.
King's was still up 10 with just under two minutes remaining when Delaware Valley scored nine of the next 12, including four by Jones, to make it a 78-74 contest with 32 seconds to go. Wagner was fouled seven seconds later and he hit two shots for a six-point advantage. The Aggies' missed a 3-point attempts and King's Nick Reisig was fouled. He sank both for an 82-74 score before Jones drained a trey with eight seconds left. Wagner went to the line two ticks later and iced the game with a pair of free throws.
Wagner, who was held scoreless in the opening half, finished with 19 points as he and Kevin Conroy paced the Monarchs in that category. Dan Maguschak came off the bench to add 13 points in the win.
Jones was 11-for-21 from the field (4-for-8 from 3-point land) and a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line as he ended the evening with a game-high 30 points. White notched 18 points, six rebounds and four blocks while
Chris Mayo hit double digits with 10 points.
