GLENSIDE (PA) – Delaware Valley College's
Jason Goldheimer hit a pair of free throws with four ticks remaining while Arcadia University missed two shots from the foul line with four-tenths of a second to go in a 74-73 Aggie road victory.
Delaware Valley won its third game in a row, all with the game-winning points coming in the final four seconds, to improve to 4-3 overall. In fact all seven games have been decided by five points or less and by a grand total of 18 points. The Knights saw their mark fall to 2-6.
The game featured seven ties and 14 lead changes with neither team holding an advantage greater than five points all evening. Three of the lead changes occurred in the final minute, starting with a pair of free throws by Goldheimer with 48 seconds left to put Delaware Valley ahead by one, 72-71. Arcadia answered on their next possession as Damian Palantino hit a layup with 16 seconds left on the clock.
The Aggies called timeout and eventually got the ball in Goldheimer's hands. The senior, who hit the game-winning 3-pointer in Saturday's overtime win at DeSales University, was fouled and he calmly hit both attempts – the second after Arcadia tried to ice him with a timeout – for a 74-73 lead.
The Knights quickly came downcourt and Lester Owens was sent to the foul line right before the final buzzer. However, Owens missed both opportunities and Delaware Valley had the non-conference win.
Arcadia shot 52.9 percent from the field compared to 39.3 percent by the Aggies. However, Delaware Valley got the job done at the charity stripe as it went 24-for-34 (70.6%) while the Knights were just 15-for-28 (53.6%). The teams were even on the boards with 33 rebounds apiece.
Jeremy Beckett paced the Aggies as the sophomore notched 24 points and nine rebounds. Goldheimer ended the evening with 15 points while fellow senior
James Jones scored 14 points and dished out five assists.
Jose Ortiz was 11-for-14 from the field and finished with a game-high 26 points for Arcadia. Darrell Mills had 12 points while Palantino and Colin McCarthy hit double digits with 10 points apiece.
