ELIZABETHTOWN (PA) – Sophomore center
Emily Soper scored 18 points and was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2010 R1 Sports Blue Jay Classic as she led the Aggies to a 70-61 victory over host Elizabethtown College.
Delaware Valley went 1-1 at the tournament to move its season mark to 5-5. The Aggies will host Lancaster Bible College on Monday, December 20 to end the 2010 portion of its schedule.
Soper finished the two days with 33 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots while shooting 53.6 percent from the field. She also bounced back on Saturday from an injury she suffered in the opening-day loss to The College of New Jersey.
Delaware Valley jumped out to a quick led only to see the Blue Jays (6-3) come back to tie at 17-17. It was still tied at 28-28 with 3:40 left before halftime when the Aggies ran off 11 straight to take the lead into the intermission. Brittany Batinieri notched five points in the spurt while
Jackie Shunkwiler and
Melissa Weil added three apiece.
Elizabethtown pulled to within three on two occasions including 60-57 on a 3-pointer by Kendra Beittel with 4:31 remaining. The Aggies responded with seven of the next nine, including four by Shunkwiler, and the Blue Jays never got closer than six points the rest of the way.
Battinieri was named to the all-tournament team as she notched 17 points and nine assists on Saturday. Shunkwiler had 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals while
Sarah Innerst added five points, nine rebounds and six steals.
Stephanie Ellwood and Megan Strohman scored 15 points apiece to pace the Blue Jays.
