DELVAL DROPS 70-62 DECISION AT WILKES

WILKES-BARRE (PA) – Wilkes University snapped a four-game losing streak with a 70-62, Freedom Conference victory over visiting Delaware Valley College.

The Colonels upped their marks to 10-7 overall and 2-5 in the conference while the Aggies, who had won two straight heading into Saturday, fell to 8-8 overall and 3-4. Delaware Valley will open the second half of the Freedom schedule at home against Misericordia University next Saturday, January 30.

Wilkes went on a 14-2 run to take an 18-6 lead midway through the first half, and it eventually went into the locker room up 11 at 31-20. In the second half, the Colonels upped the lead to 13 before the Aggies scored eight straight – four each by James Jones and Darryl White – to make it 37-32 with 15:25 to go.

Wilkes countered with 16 of the game's next 22 points for its largest lead of the game, 53-38, with 8:32 left on the clock. Delaware Valley made one last run and got to within five again, this time at 64-59 with 1:02 remaining. The Colonels then hit four straight free throws for a nine-point lead. Jones was fouled while shooting a 3-pointer with 15 seconds to go and he drained all three free throws for a 68-62 lead. However, Wilkes broke the press and Anthony Gabriel sealed the win with a slam dunk with 11 ticks on the clock.

Gabriel finished with a game-high 22 points thanks to 10-for-18 shooting and he also grabbed nine rebounds. Chris DeRojas and Tom Kresge had 16 points apiece and the two also combined for 17 rebounds.

White notched his fifth double-double in seven games with the Aggies as he notched 20 points and 12 rebounds. Jones finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, but the junior all-conference guard was just 3-for-18 from the field. Jason Goldheimer and Jeremy Beckett came off the bench to pour in 13 and nine points respectively.
