DOYLESTOWN (PA) –
Kim Vennera netted 20 points in 21 minutes of action and was one of 13 Delaware Valley College players to hit the scoring column as the Aggies recorded an 82-57 victory over visiting Eastern University in a Freedom Conference game.
The win was the second straight for Delaware Valley as it improved to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in league action. The Aggies will wrap up a three-game home stand on Wednesday night, January 20 when they host Freedom frontrunner Manhattanville College (10-4, 5-0). Eastern fell to 5-7 overall and 0-5 in the conference with Saturday's setback.
Delaware Valley led throughout most of the first half, but the Eagles crept back to within six, 27-21, after Joelle DeCarlo scored three straight points, including one of the two free throws with 2:53 to go before the intermission. However, the next five minutes of action belonged to the Aggies as they scored 17 of the game's next 19 points, including the first 10 of the second stanza, for a 44-23 advantage.
Vennera began the spurt with a jumper and then a trey for a 32-21 lead. The teams then traded baskets right before the half. Vennera had a steal and a layup just nine seconds into the second half and
Brittney Zimmerman followed with a 3-pointer for a 39-23 score. The run continued as
Emily Soper hit a layup and then assisted on another bomb by Vennera for a 21-point lead.
Delaware Valley upped the advantage to as many as 30 points midway through the half. It shot 60 percent from 3-point land for the game (9-for-15) and forced 27 turnovers. Vennera was 8-13 from the field, including a 3-for-4 showing from beyond the arc. She also had six steals and four assists in limited time. The performance helped Vennera moved into seventh place on both the Aggies' all-time scoring (1,255 points) and rebounding (604) lists.
Zimmerman was also 3-for-4 from long range as she finished with 17 points.
Brittany Battinieri had 10 points and four assists while Soper and fellow starter
Jenna Peoples combined for 11 points and seven boards.
Missy Milanese came off the bench and notched seven points, three assists and two steals in just nine minutes of action.
Bekah Roland notched 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead Eastern. Whitney McCloud and Kristine Zeiset added eight points apiece while Sam Weaver had six points and nine rebounds.
