AGGIES RALLY FOR CONFERENCE WIN OVER EASTERN

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – James Jones and Chris Mayo scored 20 points apiece to lead Delaware Valley College to a 75-69, come-from-behind victory over visiting Eastern University in a Freedom Conference game.

The Eagles (7-7, 3-2) shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, including made jumpers by Derek Wright and Justin McClelland in the final minute, to take a 33-28 advantage into the intermission. 

Martin Soaries then drained a 3-pointer to open the second half and up the Eastern lead to eight. Delaware Valley (7-7, 2-3) chipped away and finally pulled even at 43-43, on a 3-pointer by Mayo with 13:56 remaining. Eastern went back up four and still held that lead with as the clocked under nine minutes when the Aggies got back-to-back treys from Jason Goldheimer and Chris Mayo for a 56-54 advantage. Eastern then tied the game with 7:50 on the board as Derek Wright sank a pair from the foul line.

However, that was the last time the Aggies did not lead in the game. They came back down the court and Darryl White went to the line where he hit two free throws. Chris Ellis followed with a layup for a 60-56 score.

Eastern hung around and got its deficit down to two, 66-64, on an Alex Nelson jumper with 2:27 remaining. Mayo answered with a driving layup 32 seconds. Both teams had missed opportunities before Jones was fouled with 36 seconds to go. He hit one of two attempts for a 69-64 lead, but Soaries was fouled five seconds later and sank both for a three-point game. Delaware Valley got the ball in the hands of its best free shooter – Goldheimer - and he hit two with 30 second on the clock for a 71-66 score. Eastern missed a 3-point attempt and Jones was fouled. He hit two free throws and the Eagles could not score again until Collin Whipple hit a trey with just four ticks to go. Goldheimer hit two more free throws for the 75-69 final.

Jones dished out a game-high six assists to go along with his point total. Mayo was 7-for-11 from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, and he also added six rebounds and four assists. White notched his fourth double-double since joining the squad five games ago as he finished with 15 points and 13 boards. Goldheimer also hit double digits with 10 points.

Wright finished the game with 16 and 10 rebounds off the bench. Soaries and Nelson added 15 and 14 points respectively with Nelson also grabbing eight rebounds.
