DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Junior guard Kim Vennera became the 11th player in Delaware Valley College women's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau in a career, but it was not enough as the Aggies ended their season with a 57-47 home loss to Misericordia University in a Freedom Conference game.
The Cougars improved to 13-12 overall and 8-8 in the conference as they will host fifth-seeded King's College in Monday's opening-round game of the conference playoffs. Delaware Valley fell to 11-14 and 5-11 for the year.
Vennera scored on one of her patented drives into the paint for a layup with 1:45 remaining to reach the milestone. She finished the season with 507 points for the third-highest total in school history. The 5-foot-4 Vennera also led the team in rebounding with 203 and was second in both assists (69) and steals (68).
Vennera's basket also pulled the Aggies to within six, 53-47, with 1:45 remaining. However, it was the team's last points of the season as Courtney Sykes and Jesse Robinson each sank a pair of free throws to seal the win for Misericordia.
The Cougars jumped out to a quick 13-4 lead, only to see the Aggies regroup and go up by as many as seven in the opening half. They were still ahead three until Vanessa Wright's 3-pointer in the closing seconds tied the game at 24-24 at the intermission.
The contest was still tied when Delaware Valley went on an 11-4 run to build a 41-34 advantage with 11:06 remaining. Vennera scored five points while Jackie Shunkwiler added three in the spurt. However, the Cougars responded with 12 straight, including eight by Christine Marks, to take the lead for good at 46-41 with 4:58 remaining. The Aggies never got closer than three the rest of the way.
Shunkwiler finished with nine points before fouling out. Brittney Zimmerman added eight points, seven rebounds and three assists while senior Mandi Wilson, playing in her final game for Delaware Valley, notched eight points and four rebounds.
Courtney Sykes led Misericordia with 17 points while Lacey DeGraw had 12 points and nine rebounds. Wright notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards and Marks hit double digits with 10 points.
