DOYLESTOWN (PA) –
James Jones scored a game-high 27 points as Delaware Valley College rallied from a 13-point deficit and pulled out a 73-70 overtime victory against visiting Arcadia University in a non-conference game.
The Aggies (4-3) began the game ice cold, as they hit just two of their first 20 shots from the field and trailed 21-8 with 7:13 remaining in the first half. They then exploded for 14 straight points - eight by Jones and six by
Jon Evans - in a four-minute span, to take a 22-21 lead. Arcadia (2-5) regrouped and a jumper by Chris Pearson and a layup by Darrell Mills gave the Knights a 25-22 advantage at the intermission.
Arcadia extended its run by scoring the first eight points of the second stanza, including six by Pearson, for a 33-22 lead. Delaware Valley battled back and took a brief lead before the Knights went up by five, 64-59, on a free throw by Marvin Holman-Little with 3:11 remaining. However, that was the last point by Arcadia in regulation as the Aggies rallied to tie the contest behind a pair of free throw by
Jason Goldheimer with 1:19 remaining and a 3-pointer by Jones with 45 ticks on the clock. Both teams had chances to win the game in regulation, but neither could find the net and the game went into overtime.
Delaware Valley put the first four points on the board in the extra session as Jones and
Jeremy Beckett each hit a pair from the foul line. Arcadia fought back and tied it with 1:37 on a Glen Gagnon jumper. Beckett followed with a layup 20 seconds later and Jones made it a 72-69 lead with one of two free throws with 28 seconds to go. The Knights cut it to two with a Renard Smith free throw and they fouled Jones with 16 seconds to go. He hit just one of two shots from the line, leaving it a one-possession game. Arcadia got a pair of chances at the tie, but both 3-point attempts were off the mark and the Aggies escaped with the win.
Jones got 11 of 27 points from the foul line and he also added five assists in the win. Evans came off the bench to drain five treys and he finished with 18 points and six rebounds. Goldheimer added eight points while
Tom Signore came off the bench to grab a team-high 10 boards.
Pearson had 23 points for Arcadia while Holman-Little added 14 points and nine rebounds. Mills finished with 11 points and nine boards while Gagnon had six points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
