DOYLESTOWN (PA) –
Brittney Zimmerman poured in a game-high 24 points, including 19 in the second half, as Delaware Valley College erased a four-point halftime deficit and downed two-time defending Freedom Conference champion DeSales University, 69-54.
The win improved the Aggies to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference while the Bulldogs saw their marks fall to 3-3 and 0-2. It's the last Freedom games for both teams until January 9.
Delaware Valley trailed 30-26 at the break, but it was a different story in the second stanza as the Aggies shot 60 percent from the field (12-for-20) and held DeSales to 21.1 percent shooting (8-for-38) in those 20 minutes. A big reason why was Zimmerman as the sophomore guard hit all four of her second-half shots from the, including a pair from beyond the arc, and was 9-for-11 from the foul line. She also had seven steals and four assists on the afternoon.
Zimmerman gave Delaware Valley its first lead of the second half, 40-39, with a pair of free throws with 13:20 remaining. The teams traded the lead three times over the next two minutes with a Caitlin Miller layup giving the Bulldogs what turned out to be their last advantage of the contest, 45-43 with 11:16 to go.
The Aggies responded with six straight and nine of the next 10, including a pair of treys by Zimmerman, for a 52-46 lead with 8:31 left on the clock. DeSales pulled to within 53-50 at the 6:56 mark, but Delaware Valley countered with seven straight and 16 of the game's final 20 points, including a combined 12 by Zimmerman and
Kim Vennera, for the 15-point victory.
Vennera finished with a double-double as she notched 10 points and 10 rebounds. The senior also added four assists and four steals.
Brittany Battinieri notched 11 points and five assists while Jenna People had 10 points,
Jackie Shunkwiler came off the bench to tally nine points in 16 minutes of action.
Taylor Green was the lone Bulldog to reach double digits in scoring as she had 10 points. Miller, Colleen Gavin and Lori Lidlow added eight points apiece while Cherelle Simmons led the way on the board with 16 rebounds.
