JONES HITS LATE TREY, AGGIES HOLD ON FOR 73-72 WIN AT FDU-FLORHAM

MADISON (NJ) – Delaware Valley College junior guard James Jones drained a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining as the Aggies escaped with a 73-72, Freedom Conference road victory at FDU-Florham.

Delaware Valley improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play while the Devils saw their marks fall to 0-5 and 0-1.

The second half saw four ties, including 70-70 with 11 seconds remaining as Adam Katz hit one of two free throws for FDU-Florham. Delaware Valley got the ball to its all-region player after the huddle. Jones came down the length of the court, pulled up at the left wing and hit nothing but net for points number 17, 18 and 19 on the evening.

The game was not over as Katz came right back downcourt, split a double team and banked home a running shot that the Devils thought was a game-tying trey. However, the officials ruled that his foot was on the 3-point line, making the shot a “two” and ending the game in regulation in the Aggies's favor.

Delaware Valley trailed 22-20 with 4:57 remaining in the first half, before it used a 10-2 run over the next two minutes to take a six-point advantage. The Aggies would eventually take a 34-29 lead into the intermission.

Delaware Valley extended the lead to 10 by scoring nine of the first 13 points in the opening two minutes of the second half. Chris Ellis scored five of the nine for the Aggies. FDU-Florham rallied to make it a tight contest, but Jones' heroics at the end gave Delaware Valley the victory.

Jon Evans came off the bench and sparked the Aggies with 13 points and six rebounds. Jeremy Beckett added 12 points while Ellis and Jason Sofman had seven points apiece.

Katz had 23 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Devils. Ricky Fetske added 16 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
