MADISON (NJ) –
Kim Vennera scored 22 of her game-high 24 points in the second half as Delaware Valley College erased an early 15-point deficit and downed host FDU-Florham, 76-71, in a Freedom Conference game.
The Aggies won their second straight league contest as they improved to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the Freedom. FDU-Florham, which reached the Freedom Conference Championship Game a season ago, fell to 7-5 and 1-2 in the league.
Vennera played 17 minutes in the opening stanza despite picking up two early fouls and connected on just one of five shots from the field (0-for-2 from 3-point land). The second half was a different story as the 2008 all-conference honoree went the distance and went 7-for-11 from the field, including a 4-for-6 showing from beyond the arc. The guard also led the team on the boards with 11.
The Devils held an early lead in the contest before
Brittney Zimmerman's three-point play pulled Delaware Valley to within one at 18-17 with 9:43 remaining. However, the Devils went on a 14-0 run, keyed by Emily Ceranowski's five points, to take a 15-point advantage.
The Aggies then ran off eight straight, including a four-point play by
Erin Boyer, to get back into the contest. They trailed by just eight, 38-30, at the intermission thanks in part to
Rochelle Teesdale's 13 points.
In the second half, Vennera connected on a trio of 3-pointers in the first 4:11 to help Delaware Valley make it a three-point game. Teesdale then drilled a bomb of her own to tie it up at 45-45. FDU-Florham regained the lead at 49-48 before the Aggies scored 10 of the next 12 to take a 58-51 advantage with 8:44 remaining. Vennera capped the spurt with another trey.
The Devils pulled to within two points on three occasions, the last coming on a Shealyn Taggart layup to make it 70-68 with 34 seconds remaining. Vennera was fouled with no time elapsing, but she calmly hit both attempts to increase the Delaware Valley lead. Cerankowski missed a 3-point attempt at the other end and Zimmerman grabbed the rebound, was fouled and hit both foul shots for a 74-68 advantage with 26 ticks left. The Devils never got within one possession the rest of the way.
Teesdale finished with 18 points while Zimmerman tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
Mandi Wilson also hit double digits with 10 points.
Danielle Michlovsky posted a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds and also added five assists. Cerankowski finished with 15 points while Matil Mangual and Courtney Young had 13 and 12 points respectively.
