DALLAS (PA) -- Delaware Valley College ended the first half of its Freedom Conference schedule with a 62-58 overtime setback at league newcomer Misericordia University.
The loss dropped the Aggies to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in the Freedom. They are tied with Wilkes University for sixth place and are just one game behind King's College for the fifth and final playoff spot. Misericordia improved to 8-6 overall, 4-3 and fourth place in the conference.
The wild contest featured 21 lead changes, including seven over the final 3:30 of regulation and the five-minute extra session. Delaware Valley, which trailed by as many as nine in the second half, took a 51-50 advantage with a pair of free throws, but Lacey DeGraw responded with a pair of foul shots of her own just 15 seconds later.
The Aggies'
Jackie Shunkwiler and the Cougars' Christine Marks traded baskets before Shunkwiler was sent to foul line with 1:08 to go. The freshman hit both attempts for a 55-54 lead. Jess Ruvolis then blocked a DeGraw shot and grabbed the rebound with 39 ticks to go. Delaware Valley ran the game clock down to 12 seconds before
Mandi Wilson missed a shot. Misericordia came downcourt and DeGraw was fouled with four seconds left. She hit the first free throw, but missed the second to send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Shunkwiler hit from the perimeter, but it was matched by DeGraw for a 57-57 score.
Rochelle Teesdale then gave the Aggies their final lead as she hit one of two free throws with 1:40 remaining. It was DeGraw again for the Cougar as she hit two from the foul line with 1:21 to go for a 59-58 lead.
Erin Boyer missed a 3-point attempt for Delaware Valley and Misericordia's Jesse Robinson was fouled at the other end with under a minute to go. She missed both attempts but the Cougars maintained possession off the second miss and Christine Marks was fouled with 16 seconds left. She connected on both for a 61-58 lead. Boyer had a chance to tie the contest, but her 3-point attempt was off the mark. Vanessa Wright grabbed the rebound for Misericordia and sealed the game with two free throws with two seconds remaining.
Shunkwiler paced Delaware Valley with 19 points and eight rebounds. Ruvolis came off the bench to score 14 points before fouling out in overtime.
Brittney Zimmerman finished the evening with nine points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Kim Vennera, the reigning Freedom Conference Player of the Week and its leading scorer (21.4 avg) was in foul trouble all evening and finished with just seven points and seven rebounds before fouling out with 5:30 remaining in the second half.
DeGraw notched 24 points and seven rebounds for the Cougars. Robinson had a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards while Marks added 10 points in the win.
