DELVAL UPSETS FIRST-PLACE DESALES, 72-70

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College senior guard Jason Seipt notched team highs of 17 points and seven rebounds to help lead the Aggies to a 72-70 upset victory over first-place DeSales University in a Freedom Conference game.

The Aggies, under first-year head coach Casey Stitzel, are now 4-8 overall and 2-4 in the Freedom Conference. A roster mostly comprised of freshmen and sophomores has already surpassed the team's win total from season (3-22) and are just a half game out of the fifth and final playoff spot with half a season remaining. The Bulldogs dropped their first conference game of the year as their record fell to 12-2 and 5-1.

An exciting contest saw nine ties and six lead changes – all in the second half. The game was still tied at 67-67 following a layup by DeSales' Jim Malatesta with 2:18 remaining. On Delaware Valley's possession, Chris Mayo was fouled and the freshman hit one of two from the line to regain the lead. Then with 45 seconds remaining, the Aggies' James Jones was fouled and he hit both attempts to make it a 70-67 ballgame with 45 seconds to go.

DeSales turned the ball over on an offensive foul, but Delaware Valley gave the ball right back on a turnover of its own. Darnell Braswell missed a shot inside, but the Bulldogs got another chance when Charles Princiotto grabbed the offensive board. Braswell's attempt at a game-tying trey fell short with 10 ticks remaining, but Brian Hunter had the rebound and a layup to make it 70-69 with just eight seconds left.

Delaware Valley's Jason Goldheimer was fouled with 7.4 seconds left and the sophomore guard calmly hit both shots in a one-and-one situation to up the advantage to three. DeSales's Matt Zwetolitz was then fouled inside the 3-point land with four-tenths of a seconds remaining. He made the first free throw and intentionally missed the second foul shot. Braswell got off a great opportunity on the tip-in, but the ball went off the backboard and failed to drop in which set off an Aggie celebration.

Delaware Valley, which led throughout the entire first half and held a 40-37 advantage at the break, committed just nine turnovers (18 by DeSales) in the contest. Seipt scored 11 of his 17 points in the first half and was one five Aggies to hit double figures in scoring. Cam Prince came off the bench to pour in 13 points while Mayo added 12. Goldheimer and Jones finished with 10 points apiece with Jones adding six assists.

Braswell notched game highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds. Hunter finished with 13 points while Ed Lapinski added 10 points and nine boards.
