DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Chris DeRojas scored 10 of his 18 points in overtime to lead Wilkes University to a 91-81 victory over host Delaware Valley College in a Freedom Conference game.
The win lifted the Colonels to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the Freedom, while the Aggies, playing the first of three home league games this week, fell to 3-8 and 1-4.
Wilkes needed just seven seconds to hit the scoreboard in overtime as Chris Gulla connected on a layup while being fouled. He completed the three-point play and the Colonels never trailed in the extra session.
Delaware Valley pulled to within one on pair of occasions, the last coming on a pair of free throws by
James Jones with 3:53 remaining. Wilkes scored four straight to make it a 79-74 ballgame, but Jones cut that to three with two more free throws with 2:20 to go.
However, the Colonels went on a 6-0 run, including four by DeRojas, to up their advantage to 85-76. Wilkes then got it done at the foul line the rest of the way and, in fact, was a perfect 13-for-13 from the charity stripe in the overtime.
The Aggies trailed by as many as 10 in the first half, but rallied to tie the game at 41-41 at the intermission. Delaware Valley then led throughout most of the second stanza, including a 62-51 advantage with 9:57 remaining as four different players scored in an 11-2 spurt.
The Colonels battled back and used a 13-2 run to tie the game at 64-64 with 4:11 left. The teams went and back and forth the rest of the way with the Colonels taking a 70-68 lead after Gulla hit a pair from the foul line with 1:01 remaining. Delaware Valley's
Mike Williams was fouled with 42 ticks left on the clock and the freshman calmly hit both attempts to tie the game.
Wilkes turned the ball over on a travelling call with 10.1 seconds remaining, giving the Aggies a chance at the win. However,
Chris Mayo's 3-point attempt from the left corner fell short at the buzzer and the game went to overtime. The Colonels then outscored Delaware Valley, 21-11, in the extra session for the win.
Jones went over the 30-point mark for the second time this season as the sophomore guard poured in 35 points on 11-for-17 shooting from the field (2-for-4 from 3-point land) and 11-for-12 from the foul line. Williams had a double-double with 15 points and a team-high 10 boards. Mayo added nine points while
Jason Seipt notched seven points, five assists and four steals in the loss.
Tom Kresge paced Wilkes with 24 points and 12 rebounds while Steve Kline added 19 points and 11 boards. DeRojas was a perfect 12-for-12 from the foul line, en route to his 18-point total.
