DELVAL DROPS 93-91 OVERTIME DECISION AT MARYWOOD

SCRANTON (PA) – James Jones poured in 36 points to tie for the ninth-highest, single-game scoring total in Delaware Valley College, but the Aggies suffered a heartbreaking 93-91 overtime loss at Marywood University.

The back-and-forth contest features 12 ties and 14 lead changes. The largest lead in the game was nine as the Pacers (6-3) held a 59-50 advantage with 10:42 remaining in regulation. Marywood still held an eight-point lead with 8:14 to go when Delaware Valley (2-5) went on a 10-2 run to tie the game. Jones had six points in the spurt.

Later in the half, an 8-2 run by the Pacers gave them a 78-72 lead with 1:30 remaining. However, the Aggies scored nine straight – seven by Jones – for an 81-78 advantage with 21 ticks left on the clock. A layup by Prince Blacknall with 15 seconds left pulled Marywood to within one and Jones was fouled three seconds later. The sophomore transfer hit one of two free throws for an 82-80 lead. However, Sidney Tharpe sent the contest into overtime as he hit a layup with just one second remaining.

Delaware Valley opened the extra session with five straight as Jason Goldheimer drilled a trey and Chris Mayo followed with layup. The Pacers rallied to tie the game at 89-89 with 53 seconds left, but Mayo swished a pair of foul shots with 10 ticks remaining to regain the lead for the Aggies.

Marywood came downcourt and Karl Anderson hit a 3-pointer with just two seconds to go for a 92-91 advantage. The Aggies turned the ball over on the inbounds pass and the Pacers' Pat Lambert was fouled. He hit one of two free throws for a two-point advantage and Delaware Valley turned the ball over again as it tried to get in scoring range.

Jones played 41 of the 45 minutes and was 13-for-26 from the field (3-for-9 from 3-point land) and was 7-for-9 from the foul line. He also grabbed 10 rebounds. Jones' scoring performance tied five others for the ninth spot on the school's single-game list and also matched the most points by an Aggie since 1992. Isaiah Pinckney also connected for 36 points against Richard Stockton two years ago.

Goldheimer hit four treys and finished with 16 points while Mayo notched 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Blacknall notched 32 points and six assists to lead Marywood. Tharpe added 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds while Matthew Medici tallied 17 points and six boards.
