DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College used a 14-0 run in the first half to build a lead it would never relinquish as the Aggies posted a 60-52 victory over visiting Ursinus College in a non-conference game.
It was the first game in 11 days for both teams. The Aggies improved to 4-3 and they will take the court one more time in 2008 when they travel to Marywood University for a non-conference contest on Friday. The Bears fell to 2-4.
Delaware Valley scored the first six points of the contest, but a Laura Krieger 3-pointer with 14:31 remaining in the half tied the game at 8-8. The Aggies responded by hitting six of their next 10 shots, including a pair of treys. At the same time, Ursinus missed seven shots from the field and turned the ball over six times as Delaware Valley made it a 23-8 ballgame with 7:28 remaining. The Aggies eventually took a 29-16 advantage into the intermission.
Delaware Valley still held a 12-point lead in the second half when the Bears went on a 9-2 run to pull to within five, 39-34, with 12:05 remaining. The Aggies shot the lead back up to 10 but Ursinus made it a 46-41 contest after a Carolyn Konstanzer layup with 9:10 to go. Delaware Valley responded by scoring nine of the next 11 points for a 12-point lead and they never looked back.
Kim Vennera notched a game-high 18 points while adding seven rebounds and six steals.
Jackie Shunkwiler contributed 16 points and seven boards while fellow rookie
Brittney Zimmerman finished with 11 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Mandi Wilson had eight points and a career-best 10 rebounds in the win.
Krieger and Konstanzer paced the Bears with 16 and 14 points respectively. Chrissy Taylor came off the bench to add eight points and six rebounds.
