Women’s Soccer Falls After Early Alvernia Score

READING, Pa. – Delaware Valley women's soccer fell to Alvernia University, 3-0, in a MAC crossover game on Wednesday night.

Bell got the first shot off for the Golden Wolves in the opening minutes before earning their first corner kick. Bell scored off an insert from Reuter to give Alvernia a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute. An Aggies goal kick sent the ball up to Gianna Grassifulli, who had a shot stopped. Ten minutes later, Alvernia hit the crossbar and had another shot blocked in quick succession before DelVal took the ball downfield, where Marissa Rogers sent a shot wide right. In the 27th minute, Alvernia earned another corner and again capitalized, this time with Lytle finding the back of the net. Dekota Barthold made her first and only save of the night in the 31st minute, stopping a shot by Greenday.

Jenelle Frye entered the game in goal for the Aggies to start the second half. After an Alvernia shot went wide, Frye made a stop on Stair five minutes into the half. The Golden Wolves continued to apply pressure, firing three consecutive shots off target, but a pair of defensive plays by Kieran Gilligan prevented them from getting any more attempts off. Alvernia earned another corner in the 67th minute, and the ball found Bell for her second goal of the night, extending the lead to 3-0.

With seven minutes remaining, the Golden Wolves had three consecutive corner kicks but were unable to get a shot off. A well-placed through ball from Jarleny Aguilar-Acuna set up Rogers, but she was unable to get a shot away. Grassifulli followed with a long-range shot on goal that was stopped. Gilligan continued to make plays defensively in the closing minutes, blocking back-to-back shots from close range.

Following the loss, the Aggies fall to 2-5 overall. DelVal will host its final non-conference contest of the season on Friday, October 2, when it takes on PSU-Schuylkill at 4 p.m.
