Bresnen Powers Softball to Doubleheader Sweep of DeSales

DOYLESTOWN, Pa.Angelina Bresnen put together a dominant day at the plate to lead the Delaware Valley softball team to a doubleheader sweep of DeSales on Sunday afternoon.

Game 1 | Delaware Valley 9 – DeSales 1 (6 inn.)

With one out in the first, Kenzie Boyd singled through the right side before Angelina Bresnen launched a two-run homer to left field to give the Aggies an early 2-0 lead. Tessa Fredericks followed with a double and, after a walk by Tori Bockrath, Fredericks came home on a single to center by Laila Murray. Amelia Funston then capped the inning with a two-run home run to center, putting DelVal ahead 6-0.

Bresnen doubled in the second and moved to third on a Madison Donnelly groundout before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Fredericks to extend the lead.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the third with a pair of doubles, but Funston and Jillian Ulozas caught Castera attempting to steal third to end the inning.

With two outs in the fourth, Bresnen tripled and later scored on a single through the left side by Donnelly to make it 8-1.

After the Aggies turned a double play to end the top of the sixth, Jillian Collins opened the bottom half with a bunt single and Boyd followed with a hit. Bresnen ended the game with a double off the left-field fence that scored Collins for the 9-1 final.

Madison Karns earned her fourth win of the season, tossing all 6.0 innings with three strikeouts while allowing four hits.

Game 2 | Delaware Valley 9 – DeSales 5

Morgan Mecham retired the side in order in the first with two strikeouts, but DeSales responded with four runs on four hits in the second inning.

The Aggies broke through in the fourth. Donnelly led off with a single up the middle and Fredericks reached on catcher's interference. With two outs, Murray singled to center to score Taylor Mazzoni, who entered as a pinch runner. Funston followed with an RBI single to score Murray, and Boyd walked with the bases loaded to bring in another run.

After a pitching change, Bresnen delivered again, crushing a grand slam to left-center on the first pitch she saw to give DelVal an 8-4 advantage.

Donnelly later doubled and was driven in by Fredericks with a double off the fence to add an insurance run.

The Bulldogs pushed across a run late, but Karns entered in relief and induced a double-play ball to third to seal the 9-5 victory.

Mecham earned her sixth win of the season, throwing 6.1 innings with five strikeouts while allowing five earned runs.

With the sweep, the Aggies improve to 13-3 overall and 4-2 in MAC Freedom play. Delaware Valley returns to action this week, hosting Albright on Tuesday before welcoming RV Muhlenberg on Thursday.
