DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Delaware Valley softball saw its comeback fall short in game one but bounced back to take game two over Misericordia, splitting its MAC Freedom conference opener.
Game 1 | Misericordia 8 – Delaware Valley 6
The Cougars loaded the bases in the second inning with a pair of walks and a single by Mowery. After an out at home, Doherty singled to left to put Misericordia on the board. Three more runs came across in the next at-bat when Tinio doubled to left field to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead.
Laila Murray doubled to right in the third and Jillian Collins reached on an error, but the Aggies left both runners stranded.
In the fourth, Tessa Fredericks doubled to center before Tori Bockrath laid down an infield bunt to put runners on the corners. With two outs, Madison Karns walked and Murray followed with a single to center, scoring two runs to cut the Misericordia lead.
When the Cougars came to the plate, Nasso reached second before Cruz singled to drive her in. Misericordia added three more runs thanks to a pair of DelVal errors to extend the lead to 8-2.
In the sixth, Bockrath reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch after Karns moved her to third.
Angelina Bresnen reached on a fielder's choice in the seventh, followed by a walk to Madison Donnelly and a single by Fredericks to load the bases. Bockrath cleared them with a triple to right field, but a strikeout ended the rally as the Aggies fell 8-6.
Game 2 | Delaware Valley 7 – Misericordia 2
Kenzie Boyd walked to open the game and was driven in by a double from Bockrath. Bockrath later advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch with two outs to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead.
Collins and Bockrath both reached with two outs in the second before Murray doubled to left-center, driving in both runners and doubling the Aggies' advantage.
In the third, Bresnen singled and later scored on an infield error with Haley Kley reaching base. Collins then singled before Boyd reached on an error. Bockrath grounded out but drove in Kley to extend the lead to 6-0.
Misericordia got on the board in the bottom of the third when Moran reached on an error and later scored on a groundout. Doherty added a bunt single and stole second during the inning.
In the sixth, Fredericks scored on a single by Bresnen. The Aggies had runners in scoring position but could not add another run.
For the Cougars, Russo doubled to right and later scored on a Foreman single to center. Karns entered the circle in relief of Morgan Mecham and recorded two groundouts and a fly out to end the inning.
Mecham earned her fourth win of the season, pitching 5.0 innings with five strikeouts and just one earned run allowed.
Following the split, the Aggies move to 8-2 overall and 1-1 in MAC Freedom play. Delaware Valley returns to action Tuesday, March 17 at PSU-Abington.
