Softball Goes 1-1 at Home-Opener Doubleheader Against Stevens

DOYLESTOWN, PA– The Delaware Valley softball team battled out a 5-3 win and a 0-5 loss hosting Stevens for their first conference home games.

Game 1 | Delaware Valley 5 – Stevens 3

Stevens secured the first run of the game in the top of the first inning off an error, while Delaware Valley came up silent at the bottom of the inning. The second inning was when the Aggies started to gain momentum allowing no hits or runs from the Ducks and taking control offensively.

Tessa Fredericks struck first for the Aggies with a triple to right field, followed by Madison Donnelly who singled to right field for an RBI as Fredericks brought it home. With Angelina Bresnen and Donnelly on base, Amelia Funston singled through left field for an RBI, allowing Donnelly to score unearned. Jillian Collins later successfully got an RBI that resulted in Bresnen closing out the bottom of the second with a third run and bases loaded.

Coming out strong in the bottom of the third, Fredericks got another triple to right center that hit off the top of the fence. Collins singled through the left side gaining her second RBI that gave Funston the advantage to securing second base while Bresnen and Fredericks piled on in to score. Capitalizing on their lead, the Aggies led 5-1 going into the fourth inning.

The Ducks responded with two runs at the top of the fourth inning, where the remainder of the game became an offensive drought. Collins was able to single out to third base and Laila Murray secured a base as well in the bottom of the sixth but came up short of a run.

The scoring stalemate for both teams in the last three innings resulted in the Aggies first home win of the season. Pitcher Madison Karns led off for 3.2 innings before Morgan Mecham pitched for the remaining 3.1 innings and gained another win making her 4-0 on the season.

Game 2 | Delaware Valley 0 – Stevens 5

Coming out strong again, Stevens got up early with a run in the top of the first inning. The Aggies failed to convert from the first game and had three quick outs.

In the top of the second, the Aggies only allowed one on base through a walk but stopped any runs. Both teams went silent with three immediate outs from the bottom of the second until the top of the fourth inning. Still unable to score, the Ducks were only able to get one double to right field.

Both teams struggled to gain momentum as the bottom of the fourth inning until the bottom of the fifth were silent as well. The Aggies made a push through a single to left field from Donnelly, but she was caught out before second base.

The Ducks finally caught a rhythm in the top of the sixth starting with a walk that was followed by a single through the right side. Stevens had a successful steal on second base and then a double to left field that initiated two productive runs to home base. The Aggies defense allowed one more run in the inning, cutting off their run at the score of 5-0.

Unable to rally back, the Aggies gained no runs for the remainder of the game and the score stuck through the last inning. Ducks pitcher Kyra Fischer improves to a record of 6-2 on the season after throwing a complete game shutout.

Following the double-header, the Aggies moved on to 9-3 on the season, and 2-2 in the MAC Freedom. The next game for the Aggies is Thursday, March 21st when they take on Centenary University for another doubleheader at home.
