DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Delaware Valley football took down FDU-Florham, 44-0, on Saturday, led by Justin Brown's three rushing touchdowns.
On the Aggies' first possession, Mike Galasso found Mike Dunn for a short pass on third-and-long, and Dunn gained 21 yards to move into FDU territory. Galasso then connected with Nazier Fuller for a 26-yard reception, setting up Brown for a two-yard touchdown run to put DelVal ahead 7-0. The Devils picked up an early first down, but Jovan Tyrell intercepted Sconza to give the ball back to the Aggies. DelVal ran into penalty trouble on its next possession, preventing a touchdown, but Sebastian Swiatek connected on a 28-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-0.
A roughing-the-passer penalty moved FDU into DelVal territory, but the Aggies' defense held firm with tackles for loss from Basil Walter and Myles Reynolds. The Devils attempted a 26-yard field goal, but the kick hit the upright. On the next Aggies possession, Zyaire Goffney-Fleming carried the load, with a 48-yard reception by Kenny Montgomery helping move the ball downfield. From the FDU five-yard line, Galasso's third-down pass fell incomplete, and Swiatek missed a 20-yard field goal attempt.
The Devils were unable to get anything going on their next drive, as Tyrell sacked Sconza for a nine-yard loss, forcing a punt. On third-and-14 on the ensuing Aggies possession, FDU was called for pass interference, followed by a 41-yard completion to Dunn that moved DelVal to the four-yard line. After an incomplete pass and a loss on a Brown run, Galasso kept the ball himself on third down and ran it in for a touchdown. Brendan Hazell converted the extra point to put DelVal ahead 17-0 with 1:03 remaining in the half. Maurice Beverly II recorded two stops to help send the game into the break.
The Aggies forced a quick three-and-out to open the second half, and Brown broke free for a 51-yard touchdown on the first play of DelVal's ensuing possession to extend the lead to 24-0. DelVal's defense forced another three-and-out before Goffney-Fleming put together a series of short runs to move the Aggies downfield. From the three-yard line, Brown punched in his third touchdown of the game to make it 31-0. The defense followed with three consecutive sacks of the FDU quarterback, recorded by Reynolds, Jaseer Slocum and Aziyah Garland.
Later in the fourth quarter, Beverly intercepted Sconza with 12:57 remaining to give the Aggies possession. However, the drive ended with a Goffney-Fleming fumble. The Devils threw multiple incompletions before Thomas Arcaroli sacked Sconza on fourth down to force a turnover on downs.
Dayshon Jackson got some carries for DelVal before AJ Darr broke free for a 16-yard quarterback keeper. Jackson appeared to score on a 23-yard run, but a penalty on a hold nullified the touchdown. Two more Jackson runs set up Goffney-Fleming for a three-yard touchdown to make it 38-0.
On the second play of FDU's next drive, Quincy Risper forced a fumble that Zaire Fields recovered. DelVal was unable to capitalize, as Swiatek missed a 30-yard field goal attempt wide right. After both teams traded three-and-outs, Fields intercepted Smith and returned it for a touchdown as time expired, sealing the 44-0 victory.
With the win, the Aggies improved to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in MAC play. DelVal will travel to Owings Mills, Maryland, to take on Stevenson University on Saturday, Oct. 17.
