DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's basketball team used a decisive third-quarter surge to pull away from FDU-Florham and secure its first conference victory of the season, defeating the Devils 63-55 on Wednesday night.
Alexis Wright opened the scoring with a layup for the Aggies, but FDU-Florham answered with a 12-2 run over a two-minute span to take an early 12-4 lead. DelVal regained its footing at the free-throw line as Wright went 1-of-2, sparking a momentum shift. Back-to-back three-pointers from
Whitney Evans highlighted a 13-0 Aggies run that flipped the score in DelVal's favor, 17-12. The Devils trimmed the deficit late in the quarter, and the Aggies carried a 19-16 advantage into the second.
Alexis Lease-Springer ended a brief scoring drought to open the second quarter and extend the lead to five, but FDU-Florham responded with an 8-0 spurt to move back in front, 24-21. Delaware Valley closed the half strong, outscoring the Devils 10-4 over the final minutes to reclaim the lead and head into the break up 31-28.
FDU-Florham came out of halftime with a jumper to cut the margin to one, but that would be as close as the Devils would get the rest of the way.
Julianna Harris answered immediately to ignite a dominant 17-7 Aggies run, pushing the lead to its largest point of the night at 49-37. A late Wright layup in the closing seconds of the third quarter sent DelVal into the final period with a comfortable 51-40 cushion.
The Devils made one final push, opening the fourth with a three-pointer and using a 12-4 run to pull within one possession at 55-52 with 2:26 remaining. The Aggies responded with poise, capitalizing at the free-throw line and tightening up defensively to close the game on an 8-3 run and seal the 63-55 victory.
Wright led the way for DelVal with her fourth double-double of the season, posting a season-high 25 points and 15 rebounds. Lease-Springer and Evans paced the Aggies defensively with two steals apiece, while Evans also added five assists.
Delaware Valley continues its home slate on Saturday, Jan. 17, hosting King's at 1 p.m.
