SCRANTON, Pa. – After a competitive first half, the Delaware Valley men's lacrosse team fell to Marywood University, 12-4, on Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers won the opening faceoff and quickly tested Aggies' goalie
Daniel Hickling, who came up with an early save. Delaware Valley responded swiftly, as
Owen Kelly set up
Ryley Savering for the game's first goal just over a minute in, giving the Aggies a 1-0 lead. Marywood ramped up the pressure, firing multiple shots toward Hickling, though they didn't put one on net until 8:11 remained in the quarter. A minute later, the Pacers hit the post. A failed clearing attempt by the Aggies led to a turnover, allowing Marywood to even the score at 1-1 with 4:46 left in the first. Shortly after, Savering was called for an offsides penalty, and the Pacers capitalized on the man-up opportunity to take a 2-1 lead. The Aggies were outshot 14-1 in the opening frame.
DelVal started the second quarter strong, as Kelly fired a shot on goal off the opening faceoff. Moments later, after forcing a turnover, Kelly set up
Kieran Schneider, who buried the equalizer just 37 seconds into the period. However, the Pacers answered quickly, scoring back-to-back goals just 36 seconds apart to regain a 4-2 advantage. With 10 minutes left in the half,
Sean Miller and Schneider fired shots wide of the net. Later, the Pacers turned the ball over in the Aggies' zone, allowing
Ashton Benkwitt to scoop up a groundball and find Schneider, who cut the deficit to 4-3 with 6:17 remaining. Hickling came up big down the stretch, making seven saves to keep the score intact heading into halftime.
Early in the third quarter,
Luke Witko and Kelly both tested the Marywood goalie, but from that point forward, the Pacers took control. Marywood erupted for five goals in a four-minute span to extend their lead to 9-3. Miller was called for a cross-checking penalty with a minute left in the period, but Hickling made two key saves before time expired.
Marywood tacked on two more goals in the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter, pinning DelVal in their defensive zone. With nine minutes left, Witko and Schneider both fired shots wide before Schneider put one on goal. With 5:24 remaining,
Tyler Carbajal forced a turnover, and
Robert McCarnan recovered the groundball, leading to Schneider's third goal of the day to make it 11-4. However, the Pacers responded immediately with another goal, and the Aggies managed just one more shot from Savering, which was saved.
With the loss, Delaware Valley drops to 3-3 on the season. The Aggies return to action on Wednesday, March 26, when they host Neumann at 7:00 p.m.
