LITTLE ROCK, S.C. – The Delaware Valley softball team wrapped up its spring break trip with a 9-6 victory over Minnesota Morris after falling to Brevard and Lycoming earlier in the day.
GAME 1 | BREVARD 5 – DELAWARE VALLEY 0
Madison Karns started strong, retiring the Tornados in order in the first inning, striking out two.
In the second,
Tori Bockrath singled through the left side, followed by a Karns single up the middle. However,
Jillian Collins grounded out to end the inning, stranding both runners in scoring position. Brevard quickly responded, putting a runner on base before Boris singled to right field, driving in the first run of the game.
The Tornados added four more runs in the third. With one out and a runner on second, Smith singled through the left side to score one. Winkler then tripled down the right-field line, bringing home another. After a fielding error allowed another run to score, Hooped singled to right field, capping the rally at 5-0.
Kenzie Boyd, who took over in the circle, struck out Crist to end the inning.
DelVal threatened in multiple innings, including the fourth when
Amelia Funston doubled and Bockrath walked with no outs. However, the Aggies couldn't capitalize, leaving two runners stranded.
Despite getting runners aboard in the fifth and seventh innings, they were unable to score. Boyd pitched 3.2 innings in relief, striking out five and not allowing an earned run.
GAME 2 | LYCOMING 6 – DELAWARE VALLEY 2
Lycoming got on the board in the first inning with a sacrifice fly from Sobieski.
DelVal had a chance in the second when
Madison Donnelly walked and Funston singled, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat. The Aggies retired Lycoming in order in the bottom half.
The Warriors broke the game open in the third, loading the bases before scoring on a fielder's choice. A single up the middle from Sobieski drove in two more, making it 4-0. With no outs, Karns entered to pitch but surrendered two more runs before getting a strikeout to end the inning.
DelVal got on the board in the sixth when Collins reached on an infield single, and Bockrath followed with a hit up the middle. Funston then ripped a double to the left-field fence, scoring both runners to make it 6-2. However, both teams went down in order the rest of the way, sealing the win for Lycoming.
GAME 3 | DELAWARE VALLEY 9 – MINNESOTA MORRIS 6
The Aggies bounced back in their final game of the trip, taking an early lead against Minnesota Morris.
With two outs in the first,
Angelina Bresnen and Funston both singled, setting up Donnelly, who beat out an infield single to bring home the first run of the game.
Alyssa Scansaroli made her season debut in the circle and quickly got two outs, but the Cougars responded with back-to-back singles before Schmitz doubled to center, tying the game at 1-1.
DelVal answered in the second as Karns and
Katelyn Barber led off with doubles.
Taylor Mazzoni followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring one, and
Sierra Ripka singled to center to bring home another. After stealing second, Ripka scored on Bresnen's double to left center, putting the Aggies up 4-1.
Minnesota Morris got one back in the third, but DelVal kept its foot on the gas. In the fourth, Barber singled and Ripka walked before Bresnen launched the first home run of her career, extending the lead to 7-2.
The Aggies added two more in the sixth. Mazzoni singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Ripka reached on a fielder's choice, Davis got on via an error, keeping the inning alive. A passed ball allowed Mazzoni to score, and Funston's single up the middle brought in Ripka for a commanding 9-2 lead.
The Cougars rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth, with two unearned, but Karns and the Aggies held on for their fifth victory of the season.
Delaware Valley returns to action on Tuesday, March 18, against Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa.
