DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley men's basketball team clinched a home playoff game with a thrilling 75-72 victory over DeSales University on Senior Day.
Zoelin Pair quickly found
Jordan Gombs under the hoop for the first points of the afternoon before
Kamal Johnson and Brendan Boyle traded three-pointers.
Jeremiah Alexander made an immediate impact after entering the game, throwing down a powerful dunk and blocking a shot to give the Aggies a four-point lead. That advantage stretched to seven when
Antonio Redding buried a deep three.
Near the halfway mark, Boyle and the Bulldogs took their first lead of the game with a three-pointer. With the score tied at 4:53,
Jake McGinty and Johnson each knocked down a three, while Redding added a jumper. Alexander and Pair contributed on defense with key blocks before the Aggies entered halftime with a 37-34 lead.
Two minutes into the second half, a three-pointer from Gombs extended DelVal's lead to eight, followed by another from McGinty to push the advantage to nine. The Aggies' largest lead came with 14:13 remaining when Redding drained another three. He finished as the game's top scorer with 26 points, shooting 8-of-12 from the field.
DeSales responded with an 8-2 run, but more clutch threes from Redding and Johnson maintained DelVal's nine-point cushion. Both teams went scoreless for two minutes as defenses tightened before Redding broke the drought.
The Bulldogs made another push with a 10-2 run, closing within three points with two minutes left. Boyle sank two free throws to bring DeSales within one with just 18 seconds remaining. However, Redding was sent to the charity stripe twice in the closing moments, making all four free throws to seal the victory for DelVal.
With the win, the Aggies improved to 13-12 overall and 8-6 in the MAC Freedom. They will host Misericordia on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. in the conference semifinals.
