DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - Trailing by as many as 13 points in the second quarter, the Delaware Valley women's basketball team turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, outscoring Gwynedd Mercy 42–24 to secure a 64–54 comeback victory on Monday night.
The teams traded baskets through the opening six minutes of the first quarter, with a three-pointer from
Jayla Rivera giving the Aggies a 9–8 edge.
Whitney Evans followed with a layup to add two more points, but the Griffins closed the frame strong, knocking down a pair of three-pointers over the final three minutes to take a 16–11 lead after one.
Gwynedd Mercy extended its advantage to seven early in the second quarter before
Ciana Feliciano connected from long range to cut the deficit to four, 18–14. The Griffins answered with a 9–0 run over the next three minutes, building their largest lead of the game at 27–14.
Alexis Wright and Evans combined for eight points on 57.1 percent shooting down the stretch, trimming the margin to single digits heading into halftime, 30–22.
Evans opened the second half with a three-pointer to spark an 8–4 Aggies run, pulling DelVal within four at 34–30. Gwynedd Mercy briefly pushed the lead back to eight, but Wright halted the momentum with a four-point response to keep the Aggies within reach. DelVal closed the third quarter on a 5–2 run behind Evans and
Julianna Harris, ending the frame down five, 44–39.
The Aggies took control in the final quarter, outscoring the Griffins 25–10. Harris started an 11–5 comeback run with a jumper, capped by four straight points from Wright to give DelVal its first lead of the half, 50–49. Foul trouble sent Gwynedd Mercy to the line, where the Griffins shot 50 percent to tie the game, but
Emma Miller secured the rebound on the miss to keep possession with the Aggies.
Feliciano then knocked down a jumper to ignite an 11–0 run, highlighted by six points from Wright, as DelVal surged ahead by double digits, 61–50. Gwynedd Mercy held a 4–3 edge in the final minutes, but the Aggies closed out the contest to seal the 64–54 victory.
Evans and Wright both finished with 20-plus points. Wright led all scorers with 25 points while adding seven rebounds and one block. Evans recorded 21 points, a team-high eight rebounds, and two steals, while Harris paced the Aggies defensively with four steals.
DelVal is back in action in James Work Gymnasium this Thursday, Dec. 18 when they host Immaculata at 4 p.m.
