DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Delaware Valley volleyball swept Penn State Schuylkill in a dramatic three-set battle, with the first two frames going to extras.
The Lions jumped out to a quick 13-2 lead in the opening set, but kills by
Monique Smith and
Madison Alexander, sandwiched between PSU errors, started to swing momentum. Despite trailing 20-11 after a pair of miscues, the Aggies rallied with seven straight points, capped by an Alexander service ace and four consecutive Lion errors.
Alyssa Fink tied the set at 21 with a serve before the two sides traded points to 24-all. A block from
Ariana Hernandez and another PSU error secured the Aggies the first set, 26-24.
DelVal carried that momentum into the second, opening on a 5-0 run with an Alexander ace and kills from Smith and
Cassandra Gloster. The Aggies extended their lead to 8-1 before PSU clawed back, but a 4-0 run helped DelVal maintain control. Three straight Aggie errors allowed the Lions to tie it at 19, and another gave PSU its first lead of the set. The Lions pushed to 24-21, but Gloster and Smith responded with three consecutive kills to even things up. After a
Kai Logan kill, an attack error by PSU handed the Aggies set two, 27-25.
The third set stayed within one point until an error from PSU's Staller gave DelVal a 13-11 advantage, though the Lions quickly tied it at 14. The Aggies then went on a four-point run highlighted by a kill from
Samantha Wilton, and they never relinquished the lead, closing the match with a 25-20 third set.
With the sweep, the Aggies improved to 7-11 overall (0-2 MAC Freedom) and will return to action at home on Tuesday, Oct. 7, against conference foe DeSales University at 7:00 p.m
