Aggies Clinch Home-Opener in Double Overtime

Amanda Graham, Assistant Director of Sports Information

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's lacrosse team welcomed Marietta to Robert A. Lipinski Field for the home-opener, defeating the visiting Pioneers in a rainy double-overtime Tuesday afternoon.

DelVal started off strong with leading goal-scorer Ashley Birmingham putting the team in a single-goal advantage just 50 seconds into the first quarter. Possession changed hands two times before the Pioneers found themselves out front of the Aggies net to tie things up with 8:53 left on the clock. A scoreless five minutes ensued until Susan Rawding converted on the free position attempt to put DelVal ahead 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Another free position attempt for the Aggies three minutes into the second frame led to a goal this time by Samantha Charles to extend the advantage to 3-1. The teams went 2-2 thorugh the final 10 minutes with Birmingham and Kyra McKeegan finding the back of the net for the Aggies to maintain their two-goal advantage at the half, 5-3.

A six-minute scoring drought started off the third quarter before Marietta put together a three-goal run over a four-minute span to take their first lead of the game, 6-5. The Aggies ended the frame with two unanswered goals from McKeegan to regain the lead yet again, 7-6.

Scoring slowed in the fourth quarter with the Pioneers securing the only goal in 15 minutes to tie the game and force overtime. Birmingham took the only shot in the first three-minute overtime period unable to convert to send the game into a double overtime where Anna Kimbel found Susan Rawding with just a minute left for the golden goal and the win, 8-7.

McKeegan led the Aggies in scoring with three goals while Birmingham led the shots stat line with 12, as well as shots on goal with eight. Both McKeegan and Birmingham picked up a team-high two draw controls apiece. Samantha Charles led the Aggies in ground balls scooping up five.

Emily Drake played the entire game in the net making eight saves including fending off five free position shots from the Pioneers.

DelVal returns to action this Saturday, Mar. 9 at Robert A. Lipinski Field to face USMMA at noon.
