Aggies 10-Goal First Quarter Propels Them to Victory Over Centenary

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Delaware Valley women's lacrosse team put up a 10-goal first quarter to take an early lead and never look back defeating Centenary 22-4 on Saturday afternoon. The victory marks the second-straight for the Aggies.

DelVal wasted no time with Susan Rawding scoring unassisted just 30 seconds into play for the early lead. The Cyclones tallied the score, but Ashley Birmingham and Rawding followed up with back-to-back goals 20 seconds apart to put DelVal ahead 3-1.

Centenary stopped the scoring to make it a one-point deficit, but Birmingham followed up to start DelVal on a 4-0 run for the 7-2 lead with 2:31 remaining in the first quarter. Once again the Cyclones broke up the run with a single goal, but the duo of Birmingham and Rawding combined for three more through the end of the frame to give the Aggies a 10-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Birmingham continued the scoring for the Aggies in the second frame with two consecutive goals through the first five minutes to give DelVal a nine-goal lead, 12-3. The DelVal defense held the Cyclones scoreless with Viola Anderson putting up two goals and freshman Anna Kimbel netting her first collegiate goal for the 16-3 lead.

Birmingham, Rawding, Kimbel and Kyra McKeegan kept the Aggies in the lead with a combined seven goals in the second half while the defensive efforts of goalkeeper Emily Drake held the Cyclones to just one more goal in the 30 minutes to help the Aggies to a 22-4 victory.

Birmingham led the Aggies in goals with nine followed by Rawding with six. Birmingham led the stat lines for ground balls (9) and draw controls (14). Drake played all 60 minutes in the net making five saves.

DelVal rounds out its four-game home stretch this Wednesday, Apr. 3 at Notre Dame University of Maryland at 4 p.m.
