DOYLESTOWN, Pa. After a dominant first quarter, the Delaware Valley women's basketball team never looked back as they defeated King's 66-46 on Wednesday evening. The win marks second for the Aggies against the Monarchs this season and the eleventh in the series history. Delaware Valley improves to 16-6 on the season and 7-4 in MAC Freedom play.
Delaware Valley took a quick 4-0 lead as sophomores
Maisie Neuber and
Alexis Wright started the scoring for the Aggies. Senior
Haley Keenan extended the Aggies lead to 9-2 with an and-one layup with 5:19 remaining in the period. Delaware Valley would continue to dominate the first quarter as all five starters for the Aggies scored baskets within the first six minutes of the game. The Monarchs would go on to cut the deficit 15-7 with 3:08 remaining in the period. Delaware Valley finished the period on a 4-0 run to take a commanding 19-7 lead.
In the second period, Delaware Valley took a 16-point lead as first-year
Kendra Rigo made an open layup with 8:09 left in the first half. Kings went on a 12-0 run midway through the 2
nd period to cut the deficit 25-21. The Aggies would eventually break a six-minute long scoring drought as
Haley Keenan scored a fast break layup with 0:54 remaining on the clock. Despite King's outscoring Delaware Valley 15-8 in the quarter, the Aggies would go into halftime with a 27-22 lead. After scoring 19 points on 57.1% shooting percentage in the first quarter, the Monarch's defense limited the Aggies to only eight points on 23.5% shooting percentage in the second quarter. Delaware Valley was led in scoring by
Alexis Wright with 8pts and Hailey Keenan with 7pts.
Haley Keenan started the beginning of the second half strong for the Aggies with a driving layup followed by a three-point shot to help give the Aggies a 34-23 lead with 7:07 remaining in the quarter. A 4-0 run for King's was shut down by another three point make for
Haley Keenan at the 5:18 mark. Delaware Valley would retake a double-digit lead as sophomore
Ciana Feliciano scored on a driving layup to make it 40-29 at the halfway point of the third quarter. After Delaware Valley went on a 6-3 run, Kings would hit a three-point shot with 0:03 seconds left in the period to climb back 46-35.
Maisie Neuber connected on a mid-range jump shot to get the fourth quarter started for Delaware Valley. Just a few moments after, the sophomore scored an and-one layup to extend the Aggie's lead 51-37 with 8:14 remaining. The Monarchs had no answer for Neuber as she scored an open layup with 6:37 left in the game. Delaware Valley continued their fourth-quarter dominance as
Ciana Feliciano assisted an
Alexis Wright layup to extend the lead 55-39. Aggies would take a nineteen-point lead as
Maisie Neuber,
Aubrey Ennis, and
Haley Keenan scored three consecutive layups to make it 65-45. Delaware Valley would go on to defeat King's by a score of 66-46. The Aggie's were led in scoring by
Haley Keenan with 20pts, 7reb, 5ast, and 6 steals.
Maisie Neuber notched a double-double for the Aggies with 15pts, 12reb and 2ast. Delaware Valley out matched King's in the rebounding category as the Aggies had a total of forty three rebounds compared to only twenty-four for the Monarchs.
Delaware Valley will be back in action on Saturday, February 10
th, as they host the Knights of Arcadia.
