First Half Lead Slips Away, Men's Hoops Fall 78-77 to NJCU

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Delaware Valley men's basketball took a seven-point lead into halftime but couldn't hold on, falling to New Jersey City University, 78-77, on Saturday afternoon.

Mike Herrin and Antonio Redding led the Aggies' offense, scoring 14 and 13 points, respectively, while Zoelin Pair contributed defensively with a team-high nine rebounds. Pair also made a key play early, grabbing a rebound and feeding Justin Ramsey-Blythe, who scored the game's first points.

The Knights built a six-point lead midway through the first half, but the Aggies responded with free throws from Ramsey-Blythe and Caleb Johnson, followed by a three-pointer from Redding, tying the game at 10.

With around two minutes remaining in the half, Kamal Johnson scored four straight points, helping DelVal gain their first significant advantage. Caleb Johnson then hit a three-pointer, assisted by Kamal Johnson, sending the Aggies to the locker room with a 40-33 lead.

A jumper by Reggie Washington in the opening minute of the second half pushed the Aggies' lead to its largest of the game, 42-32.

Up by three, five minutes in, Mike Herrin exchanged three-pointers with NJCU's Jaheim Lewis before a timeout was called. The Knights tied the game at 12:43 with a pair of free throws from Lewis.

Brendon Bradford, playing in his first game of the season due to injury, answered with a three-pointer to keep DelVal in front. However, the Knights gradually built a six-point lead over the next five minutes.

With the score tied again, Herrin hit another three, and Kamal Johnson followed with a layup and an and-one, keeping the Aggies in the hunt. In the final minute, back-to-back threes from Isa Johnson-Williams (NJCU) and Redding gave the Aggies one last chance. However, DelVal missed four shots in the closing moments, including two three-pointers and a pair of free throws.

The missed opportunities allowed the Knights to hang on for the win, handing the Aggies their first loss of the season, dropping their record to 2-1. Delaware Valley will look to bounce back when they host Gwynedd Mercy on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 7:00 p.m.
