Birmingham Sinks Game-Winner to Defeat FDU-Florham in Overtime

MADISON, N.J. – The Delaware Valley field hockey team tied the game in fourth quarter to force overtime where Ashley Birmingham sunk her lone-goal of the game to hand the Aggies the 4-3 MAC Freedom win over FDU-Florham on the road Wednesday evening.

Back-to-back shots from the Devils resulted in a penalty corner where the Aggies defense stepped up to prevent a shot and change posesssion in their favor. DelVal worked the ball down the field and into the circle where Kaylee Hartung found the stick of Alex Graffius to put the Aggies on the board, 1-0.

The momentum shifted in favor of FDU in the second frame with the Devils putting up two goals in the first three minutes to take a 2-1 lead. The Aggies defense remained on its toes stopping two ensuing shots from the Devils to gain possession and earn the penalty corner in the 24th minute. Paige Sammons went to the goalline for the insert up top finding the stick of Birmingham. After a quick touch, she sent the ball to Sydney Keagle for the shot into the back of the cage to even the score, 2-2.

Just two minutes into the third quarter, the Devils regained a single-point edge over the Aggies holding them to just three shots in the entire frame. DelVal started the fourth quarter with a penalty corner just 44 seconds in leaving the duo of Birmigham and Keagle at it again to even the score, 3-3, and force overtime.

The Aggies came out strong in the overtime period dominating offense with three shots the first two minutes. Action slowed over the next minute and a half until Birmingham picked up posesssion right inside the cirlce making a spin around the Devils defender and firing off the shot for the golden goal.

DelVal returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 26 when they face DeSales in a 6 p.m. matchup at home as they celebrate and honor the 2024 seniors.
