Strong First Half Pushes Aggies to Victory

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley field hockey team put up five goals in the first nine minutes of the game to take an early victory and never look back defeating Cedar Crest 4-1 on Wednesday night.

Just five minutes into play, Kaylee Hartung brought the ball into the circle where Alex Graffius awaited out front of the goalie for the quick dump to Sammons for the first goal of the night.

About four minutes later, Hartung and Ashley Birmingham had a give and go down the right side bringing Birmingham down the goal line. She found Graffius just to the left of the goalkeeper for the shot into the bottom left of the cage for the 2-0 advantage.

Under a minute later, Hartung found herself with a breakaway down into the circle for the shot into the goalkeeper pads. Graffius was near by to collect the shoot ball for the quick shot into the cage to make it a 3-0 game at the end of the first corner.

The Aggies saw back-to-back corner attempts in the second quarters. Birmingham ripped off the first shot, but was stopped with a diving save from the Falcons goalkeeper forcing the second corner for DelVal. Sydney Keagle stood at the goal line yet again for the insert up to Birmingham who took a quick tap before firing off a rocket deflected left by Keagle out front for the goal.

Cedar Crest saw its chance to score earning a penalty stroke in the final three minutes of the third frame. The shot was no match for Aggies goalkeeper Alyssa Rudd who made the save to prevent the score and maintain the shutout. Just two minutes later, the Falcons found their chance again popping the ball in between the feet of Rudd to make it a 4-1 game.

DelVal worked hard in the final 20 seconds of the game to extend its lead back to four with back-to-back corner attempts. Sammons fired off both shots at the goal but struggled to convert.

The Aggies are back in action this Saturday, Oct. 5 when they travel to Hood College for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Blazers.
