Women’s Basketball Drops Hard-Fought Contest to No. 20 DeSales

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's basketball team took a single-point lead over DeSales twice in the first half, but a double-digit run from the Bulldogs in the final five minutes of the second quarter put the Aggies in a deficit they couldn't overcome dropping the contest 70-48.

Maisie Neuber got things going for DelVal with the steal in the DeSales back court and the fastbreak layup to tie it 2-2. The Aggies defense held strong forcing a turnover from a shot clock violation to regain possession putting Aubrey Ennis in the paint for the jumper. A missed shot gave the ball back to DeSales for quick layup to start a 7-0 run broken up with a hook shot from Taylor Richardson to bring the deficit down to five, 9-4. The Bulldogs continued to pull ahead by a margin of 11 eventually cut down to six thanks to an Aubrey Ennis three-pointer, 18-12. After a scoreless two minutes, Ennis and Jenna Schiessl teamed up for five points in the final minute to cut the deficit to just one at the end of the first quarter, 18-17.

Neuber got things going once again collecting the offensive board and converting the layup under the net to give DelVal its first lead of the game. 19-18. Foul trouble put the Bulldogs at the line shooting 2-of-2 to pull ahead once again, but Alexis Wright kept the Aggies in it with the layup for the 21-20 advantage. DeSales responded with a 10-1 run to build up an eight-point lead and force a DelVal timeout with 2:47 left to play in the half. The scoring slowed in the final minutes with the teams going 2-2 giving the Bulldogs a 32-24 lead at the end of the second quarter.

The Aggies gave up one point at the charity stripe, but a 5-0 run that lasted two minutes brought them back within four points of tying, 33-29. The Bulldogs finished the frame with 18 more points while holding Wright and Neuber to a combined five to put DelVal behind 51-34 heading into the final quarter.

The Bulldogs held DelVal scoreless through the first three minutes until Neuber ended the drought with a layup from Ennis followed up by an assist to Taylor Richardson for the layup to make it 57-38 with 6:11 remaining in the frame. Wright put up seven of the Aggies' 10 points in the final five minutes, but a 13-point performance from the Bulldogs increased the final deficit to 22 points, 70-48, to end the game.

Wright and Neuber both led the scoring with 15 points apiece. Ciana Feliciano led the battle at the boards with nine rebounds. Nueber also ended the game with a team-high five steals.

DelVal returns to action this Wednesday, Jan. 24th when they host Stevens at 7 p.m.
