BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's volleyball team clinched the first two sets before Bryn Athyn set the game into a fourth set with the Aggies dominating the set 24-12 for the 3-1 victory over the Lions on Thursday night.
The win improves DelVal to 7-6 overall while Bryn Athyn falls to 0-10 on the season.
The Aggies put up a quick three unanswered points to start the first set before a series of mistakes put the Lions on the board to tie it up 3-3. The teams remained neck-in-neck until a 4-0 run put DelVal in the permanent lead, 19-12. Bryn Athyn responded with two unanswered points, but the Aggies held the 6-2 advantage through the remainder of the set to take it 25-16.
The Lions were the first to strike in the second set mounting a 4-1 lead over DelVal. The Aggies offense was slow to start eventually mounting a 6-1 run to take an 8-6 lead. The Lions came within one point of tying two more times before back-to-back errors from the Aggies allowed two-straight points for Bryn Athyn to tie it up 18-18. The Aggies' offense got right to work putting together a 7-1 run to win the set 25-19.
Bryn Athyn found its grove to start the third set stuffing the Aggies with a 6-0 run for the early lead. Three kills paced DelVal to a 5-1 response to bring the deficit down to two, 7-5. The Lions continued to hold the edge over the Aggies until a number of errors paired with two kills gave DelVal the 5-0 run it needed to take the lead over the Lions 11-10. The teams traded points keeping the score close before a huge 9-1 run from the Lions finished out the set, 25-17.
DelVal opened the fourth set putting up six points while holding the Lions to two for the four-point edge. A 3-0 run from Bryn Athyn brought it back within a single point, 6-5. The Aggies were quick to answer with a 6-0 run to build a 12-5 lead. DelVal continued to maintain the lead with a 4-0 run capped off with a
Samantha Wilton service ace put the victory out of reach for the Lions with DelVal holding a 10-point lead, 21-11. The Lions put up just one more point before the Aggies ended the set on a 4-0 run for the 25-12 win.
Olivia Deffendall led the Aggies offense with 12 kills on 24 total attacks.
Emma Helverson and
Monique Smith contributed greatly to the offense with seven kills apiece.
Hannah Brennan helped pace the attack efforts with 30 sets. Deffendall and Brennan also combined for two blocks each. Wilton totaled a team-high four service aces.
Grace Wilson led the defense with 18 digs. Wilton (14), Brennan (12) and Deffendall (12) also recorded double-digit digs in the game.
The Aggies return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at FDU-Florham at 7 p.m.
