DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team scored nine runs in a span of four innings and held on late for a 9-8 non-conference victory over visiting Widener University.
The Aggies improved to 10-16 overall while the Pride fell to 14-16. Each team had 11 hits in the game, but Widener committed four errors to just one by DelVal.
The Aggies' lone error came in the first inning and resulted in two unearned runs that gave the Pride an early 2-0 lead after one.
DelVal responded with multiple runs in each of the next four innings to open up a 9-3 lead after five. Sean Gledhill got the rally started with an RBI triple and came in to score on an RBI by Garrett Zimmerman. Gledhill picked up another RBI in the third as part of a three-run, three-hit inning for the Aggies that gave them a 5-2 lead.
After the Pride scored one in the top of the fourth, DelVal tacked on two more in the bottom of the frame. Nate Rice picked up an RBI on a bases loaded sacrifice fly, and Bobby Bright laced an RBI triple down the right field line. Two more runs from the Aggies in the fifth made it a 9-3 game heading into the sixth inning.
Widener made a charge in the top of the eighth with five runs on four hits to pull within one. The first three batters reached to load the bases and Garrett McClain drove everyone home with a double to the gap in right-center for his third hit of the game. Kyle Brex followed with an RBI triple and Myles Calder drove him home with two outs. The Aggies got Justin Costa to line out and strand the tying run at second.
After a lead-off single by the Pride to start the bottom of the ninth, DelVal called upon first-year Ryan Ness to close the game. He was aided by his catcher Garrett Zimmerman who threw out a would-be stealer at second base and then stranded two runners to end the game and preserve the 9-8 win.
Bright, Gledhill, Ramos, each had two hits to lead DelVal. Bright and Gledhill drove in two and Ramos scored twice. Zimmerman also drove in a pair. The Aggies' five pitchers combined for four strikeouts led by two from Orion Frailey.
DelVal will return to conference play on Friday with a doubleheader at FDU-Florham slated for 12 p.m.
