MYRTLE BEACH (Sc.) – The Delaware Valley softball team plated 14 runs over two games, but came away on the losing end during both games of a doubleheader on Monday. The Aggies fell to Sweet Briar 10-7 in game on and 17-7 in five innings to Bridgewater State in game two.
GAME ONE
Sweet Briar (3-8) got on the board in the top of the first with two runs on three hits and an error, but the Aggies answered with four of their own in the bottom of the frame. First-year Tori Bockrath got DelVal (1-2) on the board with an RBI double to right-center that plated Carly Mahal. After an error, Bockrath would score on an RBI single from Kenzi Boyd to tie the game. Jillian Ulozas and Olivia Rexrode picked up RBIs with the bases loaded to give the Aggies a 4-2 advantage after one.
The Vixen reclaimed the lead in the top of the second with three runs on three hits and another DelVal error. Two of the runs in the frame were unearned. In the bottom of the second, the Aggies got one back as Sierra Ripka led off with a single, stole second, and came around to score on another RBI base knock from Bockrath to make it a 5-5 game after two.
Over the next three frames, Sweet Briar posted five runs on five hits and four DelVal errors, while holding the Aggies to just two hits and no runs to open up a 10-5 advantage going into the sixth.
Olivia Spofford gave DelVal a spark in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff double and the Aggies loaded the bases with nobody out. After a punch out, Madison Donnelly worked an RBI walk, and Asha Miller scored one with a sacrifice fly to make it 10-7.
The Vixen got a fly ball to center to end the threat, and allowed just one baserunner in the seventh to secure the 10-7 victory.
Bockrath and Donnelly each finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and combined for three RBI, while Spofford was 2-for-4 with a run scored. The Aggies had 10 hits as a team. Boyd pitched five innings for DelVal and allowed 10 runs, five earned, with one strikeout. Miller did not allow a hit in two innings of relief work, but did walk three.
Kaylie Hudson led Sweet Briar going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBIs. Three other Vixen recorded two hits apiece.
GAME TWO
The Aggies (1-3) got the scoring started in the top of the first on a two-run single through the right side by Madison Donnelly to put the Aggies ahead 2-0. DelVal tacked on three more runs on a wild play when Jililan Ulozas singled to score Tori Bockrath. Donnelly then came around to score when the throw from left field sailed over the catcher's head. The catcher then tried to flip home when that throw got away and Yasmine Gonzalez came all the way around from first to score. Ulozas was then thrown out at third on the play, but not before the Aggies went ahead 5-0 after a half inning.
Bridgewater State (2-2) answered in the bottom of the first with two unearned runs on no hits, but took advantage of two Aggie errors and two walks, cutting the deficit to 5-2 after one inning.
The Bears would go on to take the lead in the bottom of the second, plating four runs on three hits and once again taking advantage of two DelVal errors to lead 6-5 after two innings.
After Tori Bockrath reached on an error and Madison Donnelly walked, Ulozas stepped to the plate with two outs and ripped a two-run double to deep center field to put the Aggies ahead 7-6.
In the bottom half of the third, the Bears blew the game open scoring 11 runs on eight hits with two DelVal errors on their way to the 17-7 win in five innings.
Jillian Ulozas led the Aggies going 2-for-2 with three RBIs at the plate.
DelVal will return to action on Wednesday, March 8th for a doubleheader against Dean College and Lancaster Bible at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
