Bizarre Finish in Game One Concludes in Tie; Aggies Hang on to Win Game Two, 8-6

MYRTLE BEACH (Sc.)— The Delaware Valley softball team took part in a wild doubleheader on Wednesday that saw them lose game one, only to hours later have the final score changed to result in a 10-10 tie against Dean College in game one of the day's doubleheader. In game two, the Aggies took an 8-1 lead into the seventh inning before fending off a later Lancaster Bible charge to hold on to win, 8-6.

GAME ONE

The Aggies (1-3-1) jumped out to a quick start in the first, scoring three runs. Carly Mahal singled and was sacrificed to second by Sierra Ripka. After Mahal stole third, Madison Donnelly tripled to left to bring home the first run. Tori Bockrath and Kenzie Boyd each drove in runs with singles in the inning to give the Aggies a 3-0 lead.

Dean (0-6-1) responded in the bottom of the first on one hit and one error.

The game remained 3-1 into the bottom of the third when Dean put a runner on second with a one out double. After a fly out gave the Bulldogs two outs, a single put runners on second and third when the runner advanced to second on the throw home. Asha Miller forced a flyout to center to maintain the 3-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Kenzie Boyd led off with a single before Jillian Ulozas tripled her home to extend the lead to 4-1. Olivia Spofford followed with a sacrifice fly to score Ulozas, giving the Aggies a 5-1 advantage.

In the fifth, Tori Bockrath ripped a double to score Donnelly who reached via an error, making it 6-1. Later in the inning with runners on the corners, the Bulldogs got a pop out to the catcher who tried to fire to first to turn a double play on Asha Miller. When the ball slightly got away from the first baseman, Miller took off for second. The throw to second was slightly late, and on the throw, Bockrath safely took home, giving DelVal a 7-1 lead.

Dean came roaring back in the bottom of the fifth, plating six runs on just three hits while taking advantage of five walks to even the score at 7-7.

Neither team scored in the sixth, which led to the crazy seventh inning. With one out and nobody on in the top of the frame, Bailey Smith smashed a homerun to left center, putting the Aggies back in front, 8-7. Boyd and Ulozas followed with back-to-back triples and Carly Mahal singled home Ulozas, giving the Aggies a 10-7 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh.

In the bottom of the frame, the Bulldogs had a runner on second with two outs. Dean followed with an RBI double, a walk, an RBI single and a walk to bring the score to 10-9 with the bases loaded and two outs. A wild pitch brought home the tying run, but the Bulldogs were under the impression they had won the game. The runner from first began to celebrate and run toward the dugout when DelVal eventually tagged her out for the final out of the inning. Dean, who was the designated home team, had the score at 11-10, while the official stats and the DelVal scorebook had the score at 10-10.

After neither umpire knew what to do, the tournament director was called to the field where he compared both team's books. After a lengthy discussion that took nearly 15 minutes, it was decided that Dean, which was deemed the official book since they were the home team, had scored a run in the third inning, a run that never actually happened. Due to that ruling, the Bulldogs won 11-10.

Hours later after the tournament director reviewed film, it was determined that the Bulldogs never scored a run in the third inning and that the home book was incorrect. The ruling was to have both teams return in the bottom of the seventh with runners on second and third with two outs in a 10-10 game, but since Dean had already left the field and had no more games left in Myrtle Beach, a tie was eventually decided.

Carly Mahal, Kenzie Boyd and Madison Donnelly each recorded three hits in the game, while Jillian Ulozas and Tori Bockrath had two hits and two RBIs. Donnelly, Bockrath, Boyd and Ulozas all scored two runs in the game.

GAME TWO

The Aggies (2-3-1) responded to the chaos of game one with an explosive first inning. Carly Mahal scored the first Aggie run on a wild pitch. Tori Bockrath doubled and Makenna Cooper reached on a walk to put two runners on. After a wild pitch advanced both runners, Kenzie Boyd doubled down the right field line to score Bockrath, giving DelVal a 2-0 lead. Jillian Ulozas stepped to the plate next and singled up the middle to score two runs, making the score 4-0 after a half inning.

DelVal kept their foot on the gas in the second when Bockrath singled up the middle to plate Mahal and Olivia Rexrode, pushing the lead to 6-0.

With the score still at 6-0 in the top of the fourth, Bockrath once again came through for the Aggies with an RBI single, pushing the lead to 7-0. The first-year collected her fourth hit in the sixth, an RBI double, to make the score 8-1 after Lancaster Bible (4-4) scored a run in the fifth.

Kenzie Boyd kept the Chargers off balance, allowing just one run through the first six innings of play.

With the Aggies leading 8-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Chargers put together their biggest inning of the game. Five straight hits to start the inning made the score 8-4 and put runners on first and second with nobody out. After a pop out, two more hits brought the score to 8-6 with two runners on and one out. Kenzie Boyd then fielded a ground ball and got the lead runner at third for the second out. An infield single then loaded the bases, but Boyd induced a ground ball to Ulozas who threw to Yasmine Gonzalez at third for the final out.

Tori Bockrath lead the Aggies going 4-for-4 with four RBIs, a run scored and a double. Carly Mahal went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Jillian Ulozas drove in a pair of runs for the Aggies.

The Aggies will finish up their spring break trip tomorrow against Gwynedd Mercy at 5 p.m. and Ursinus at 7 p.m.
