ABINGTON (Pa.)--- The Delaware Valley University softball team traveled to Penn State-Abington for a non-conference doubleheader and fell 9-5 in game one and 11-7 in game two. Game two was called due to darkness in the top of the sixth with one out.
GAME ONE
After a scoreless two and a half innings to start the game, PSU-Abington (6-4) scored a run on an Aggie error to take a 1-0 lead.
The Aggies (3-10-1) responded in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs on an RBI single by Tori Bockrath. The first-year eventually would score on a wild pitch to take a 2-1 lead.
The Nittany Lions evened up the score in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI triple. The Aggies bounced right back in the fifth with two runs on a Kenzie Boyd RBI single and a fielding error by PSU to take a 4-2 lead.
PSU-Abington came right back in the fifth with two runs of their own on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, evening up the score at 4-4 after five innings.
The Aggies were held scoreless in the sixth before the Nittany Lions broke things open in the bottom half. Jenna Gorman came through with a bases-clearing double to put the hosts ahead 7-4. Hailey Gamble capped the inning off with a two-run double to grow the lead to 9-4. Sierra Ripka stole home in the top of the seventh, but it was the only Aggie run in the inning.
Sierra Ripka and Madison Donnelly each had two hits for the Aggies with Donnelly drawing a pair of walks in her other two plate appearances.
GAME TWO
The Nittany Lions wasted no time in game two to jump out to an early lead, as they scored eight runs in the bottom of the first. The hosts had just five hits in the inning, but were helped out by an Aggie error and a pair of walks, as well as a hit-by-pitch.
The Aggies clawed back in the second with three runs without a hit. Ashley Brubaker drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, while Kathleen McGeoy drew a bases loaded walk. Danielle Helwig scored the third run by stealing home.
The Nittany Lions tacked on a run in the second with a sacrifice fly to grow their lead to 9-3. Brubaker got that run back in the top of the third with an RBI double to score Makenna Cooper, bringing the deficit to 9-4.
Jonalynn Hamilton led off the bottom of the third with a solo homerun for PSU-Abington, as the hosts led 10-4. One again, the Aggies fought back, scoring three runs in the fourth on a Donnelly RBI single and Tori Bockrath RBI double. Bockrath would eventually score on a wild pitch, bringing the score to 10-7. The Nittany Lions added their 11th run in the bottom of the fourth for the game's final run.
The Aggies were held to just three hits in the game, but Kathleen McGeoy, Sierra Ripka and Bailey Smith drew a pair of walks each for DelVal.
Gretchen Yanss led PSU-Abington in game two, going 3-for-4 with a run scored.
The Aggies will be back in action Thursday, March 23rd for a home doubleheader against Cedar Crest starting at 3PM.
