DALLAS (Pa.) -- The nationally ranked Delaware Valley University football team secured the outright Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Championship title for the sixth year in a row with a 28-6 victory on the road at Misericordia University.
The victory improved the Aggies to a perfect 8-0 in MAC play and extended their win streak against conference opponents to 52, a mark that dates back to the 2016 season. It is the longest such streak in the 70 year history of MAC football.
DelVal got the ball to start the game and went 81 yards on 12 plays that ate up 7:36 of game time. First-year Shomari Richards capped the drive with his first career touchdown as he went up and took the ball away from a defensive back in the end zone. It was a 34-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Louie Barrios IV. Mike Bartley's extra point made it 7-0, DelVal.
Early in the second quarter, sophomore Jack Fallon punched in a three-yard touchdown run to complete another long Aggie scoring drive. This time, they went for 51 yards on 14 plays and spanned 6:52 of game time. It was the ninth touchdown of the season for Fallon and gave DelVal a 14-0 lead.
The Cougars (3-6, 3-5 MAC) got one back before the end of the half when T.J. Prather found Owen McGuffey in the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown. A missed PAT kick made it a 14-6 DelVal lead at the half.
DelVal had the ball for over 20 minutes in the half and racked up 202 yards of offense while holding the Cougars to 96 yards.
In the third quarter, James Mahana got his second blocked punt in as many weeks to set the Aggies up at the Misericordia 30-yard line. DelVal handed the ball to Fallon four times and he found the end zone again to put the Aggies up, 21-6.
Early in the fourth quarter, Luan Avdijaj found pay dirt for the fourth time in three games and DelVal went on to celebrate with the championship banner and a 28-6 win.
The Aggies finished with 326 yards of offense including 188 yards on the ground. Fallon eclipsed 100 yards rushing for the fourth time in five games as he led the team with 109 yards on 21 carries and two scores. Kyle Powell added 11 carries for 57 yards. Barrios completed six passes for 138 yards including one to Dillon Shamanow that went for 54 yards. Defensively, Anthony Puntolillo had six tackles and a tackle for loss and Jacquez Mabin had 3.5 stops with two coming behind the line of scrimmage.
Gavin Moris had a game high 11.5 tackles to lead Misericordia defensively. Offensively, the Cougars completed 12-of-24 passes as a team for 11 yards and they ran the ball for just 48 yards. Wide receiver Owen McGuffey caught four passes for 49 yards and a touchdown.
DelVal Football will look to complete its perfect conference slate next week when it host Widener in the Keystone Cup rivalry game at 12 p.m. Before the game, the Aggies will honor their seniors with a special senior day ceremony.
This win also earned DelVal its sixth straight automatic berth to the NCAA playoffs. The Aggies will find out who they are playing and where during the Division III football playoff selection show on Sunday, November 12.
