ABINGTON, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's basketball team put together a 45-point second half thanks in part to a double-double performance from
Haley Keenan to defeat Penn State Abington 79-59 on Tuesday night.
The Aggies came out strong with Kennan joining forces with
Ciana Feliciano and
Alexis Wright for an early seven-point lead. Back-to-back threes from the Nittany Lions changed the lead in their favor, 11-9. A jumper from
Kendra Rigo quick tied it up and set DelVal on a 6-1 run to take a three-point advantage into the second quarter, 15-12.
The second quarter was a tighter battle between the two squads. The Aggies held a slight edge over Penn State shooting 28.89% (7-of-18) from the field including 66.67% from the long range (2-of-3) and 50% from the charity stripe (3-of-6). The Nittany Lions shot 7-of-20 from the field and saw greater success from beyond the arc shooting 33.33% (3-of-9), but fell short at the free throw line hitting just one of their two shots. DelVal's 19-point effort in the frame put the team in a four-point lead heading into the second half, 34-30.
DelVal opened the half with a 9-0 run to pull ahead of the Nittany Lions by 13 points, 43-30. A foul from
Aubrey Ennis sent Penn State to the line to stop the run, but a long ball from Wright quickly followed to extend the Aggies lead further, 47-31. Penn State wouldn't come closer than 12 with the Aggies ending the frame on a 4-0 run to take a 17-point advantage into the final 10 minutes, 58-41.
Penn State opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, 12-3 run from the Aggies pushed the deficit to 24 points, 70-46, with 6:39 left to play. The Nittany Lions held the 13-9 edge over DelVal through those final minutes, but it was too little too late as the Aggies walked away with the 20-point victory.
Keenan's 32 points off 13-of-20 shooting including 2-of-4 from deep and 4-of-6 from the charity stripe paired with her team-leading 11 rebounds paced the game for the Aggies.
Maisie Neuber also finished the game in double-digits sinking 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line for 17 points. Wright and
Kendra Rigo also recorded double-figures in the game with 10 points apiece. Wright finished just shy of a double-double with nine boards. Ennis led the team in assists with eight and Feliciano recorded a team-leading four swipes.
DelVal takes a six-day hiatus before returning to action against Immaculata for the home-opener on Monday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m.
